What will happen is, you'll put taxes on The Dope(tm) and they'll have to spend all that revenue (and more) to subsidize all the folks who will do nothing but sit around getting high all day.

I guess the same goes with all the people sitting home getting drunk all day...

At least get the tax from their weed... Let the lazy stoners pay for something..

Specifically, the bill leverages federal funds to incentivize legalization in states that have enforced laws against marijuana in a way that disproportionately impacts low-income people and people of color — a category that includes virtually every state

I support legalization on both the federal and state level, but this is bullshite.

My entire life would be so much better if I could just smoke a little pot. I don't care how hippie that sounds. I work 60 hrs a week and have an infant at my house. If on a Saturday night I could smoke a little weed to relax without having to interact with a drug dealer and risk losing my job and family I'd be happier every day.

I'd up vote 100000 times if I could

Regardless of taxes, we could save a ton of time and money if it were legal.

How much of the government do you think the sin tax on liquor would fund? 1%? Less?

Personally, I'm for legalization of cannabis. However, I do so with my eyes open. It is not the panacea that the libertarians and stoners want to make it out to be. It will be as problematic as other intoxicants, although those problems will be different. Insofar as we can extract reasonable taxation from it, we should.

But let's not engage in fantasies like dope tax will replace income tax. Or even be a net gain in the long run. It might be, but it's too soon to tell, IMHO. We really haven't experienced what wide open legalization of any recreational intoxicant other than alcohol in 2 generations in this country.

It's the next cash crop. Legalize it and profit from it. This is the Goddamn US of A. Let's be good little capitalists and exploit the situation.

Not a fan of Booker, but I'll say tax the shite out of it and get rid of income tax...

You really think revenue from taxation on marijuana would equal revenue from income tax?

Don't tax it but don't use any public funds for anything related to marijuana treatment.

Compromise?

No it won't, but it's a start...

Remember why income taxes were brought up?

And you think they haven't legalized for so long because of the societal risk of the plant?

The only reason MJ has not been legal for a long time is the governments inability to enforce taxation on the product.

Weed, unlike 99% of taxable crops, will grow anywhere and everywhere. You can throw it on the ground and it'll grow. This makes it very difficult to regulate who is growing and who is not. Since the source is so uncontainable the problem multiplies down the distribution chain.

Trust me if they could tax it it would be legal. That is why these states that have legalized are exciting to watch the results. If they have figured it out then national should fall right in line. Just have to prove the tax money is actually rolling in first.

That's actually not true at all. I've made beer before. It's not that hard, but I would rather go to the store and buy it because it's more convenient and they have a better variety. Weed isn't just some plant that you throw in dirt, forget about, then pluck a bud and roll it up.

Anything related to marijuana use like driving high and getting into an accident for example?

Don't tax it and don't use public funds. Keep the government away from it altogether.

Hell, do that for all the drugs. Let people ruin their lives but don't ask the taxpayers to fund their choices should they want to quit.

Ah, gotcha.

I don't mind a standard sales tax, but rather an additional exorbitant tax like they do for booze and tobacco. They can take those dollars from the sales tax and do what they want with it.
