Prince Mohammed bin Salman is going to change the ME

quote:

Saudi Arabia is to allow cinemas to open for the first time in 35 years as it continues a push to overhaul its society and image after decades of hardline rule.

The first movie theatres will be opened by March and it is intended that up to 2,000 screens will be in place within 12 years.

Announcing the move on Monday, the culture minister, Awwad Alawwad, said: “This marks a watershed moment in the development of the cultural economy in the kingdom. Opening cinemas will act as a catalyst for economic growth and diversification. By developing the broader cultural sector we will create new employment and training opportunities, as well as enriching the kingdom’s entertainment options.”

The announcement was widely welcomed but left some citizens worried that the breakneck speed of change would lead to a pushback in a country that for decades has been one of the world’s most culturally austere and restrictive.

“It’s spectacular news. We are in a state of shock,” said Hisham Fageeh, a Saudi actor and producer, but he expressed concern over censorship, as “any kind of intimacy and love is considered taboo and a moral violation”.

You mean Saudi Arabia

Movie theaters and more progressive policies have been in place in many of their neighboring countries.

Lawrence of Arabia should go over well. Until they see that King Faisal is being played by a British actor.

I talked with a guy how worked and lived in SA and he said it is boring to live there.
Said he and his wife would leave the country every weekend just so they could go see a movie. He was muslim but did not like their rules.
he said the only thing to do was go to the mall or desert.

The desert can be hazardous. Wild dogs in packs can be a bitch.

I understand no theaters

Did they not have home video or satellite dishes either?

I know the cultural police in some countries would regularly lose their shite over satellite dishes used to watch soccer.

He’s consolidated power to make himself a strongman dictator, the Middle East isn’t changing. Movie theaters are irrelevant.

Not a problem. You don't go out at mid day. You bring water and you ride a horse. But if dogs spook your horse you better hang on.

First women drivers and now this! Next thing you know they'll have drive in theaters with couples making out! How degenerate is that?

So long as it isn’t a Jew, I don’t really think they care.

You are overestimating Saudi influence. As long as they are still Wahhabi, they will be a problem.
