First off, this really isn't relevant to this discussion. Secondly, there are still people who do this in the name of religion. They're called Islamic extremists. If these people really wanted to make a statement they'd do something against Islamic extremists. But they don't. They want attention, nothing more.

I wonder if towns could enact ordinances allowing any and all to erect religious monuments in city hall, but only if they don't seek out media coverage for what they've done? I bet we'd see a lot less "atheist" displays.

Not all atheists are nihilists. The only thing that all atheists have in common is a lack in belief of a deity. It's a very diverse group of people, and 'atheist' tells you very little aside from a person's stance on religious belief.

When you think in terms of eternity (like believing Christians should), you then realize that if you don't try to tell people what will happen you will have some tinge of guilt for not at least trying to tell people the truth while here on earth.
