Tom and Gayle Benson were/is devout Catholics who are very close to the Archbishop and who have given lots of money and assistance to the Church for many many things.

No one is defending the actions of the sexual predators or of those clergymen who covered up their crimes.

Archbishop Aymond has been the leader who has done the right things. He has done the hard work to change the culture in the local diocese by installing a comprehensive screening and training program for all clergy, teachers, and lay people - anyone who has contact with children in any capacity for the Archdiocese. He has also been one of the first bishops to publish a complete list of all names of credibly accused priests and religious.

Let’s be clear. This was not an easy process to determine which ones were “credibly accused”, and the cases go back many decades. Very few are recent. The rights of victims had to be considered in each case before the names could be released, with many of the cases having had individual non-disclosure arrangements.

All of that takes legal expertise and public relations expertise.

If you want to get upset that Gayle Benson helped out her friend, the Archbishop, in his good faith effort to move this scandal forward into the light, correcting the errors of the past, protecting the rights of the victims, while also keeping the Church from sinking so that it can continue to do its many good works and preach the Word of God, then go right ahead. That’s your prerogative, but it’s a ridiculous leap to say that the Saints organization supports child rape.
