You really don't understand how our government works do you?

We the people grant certain powers to the government and agree upon guaranteed protection of certain rights from the government. Marriage is not one of them.

Why not?
Think yourself through the process of getting the government out of the marriage business. At some point in the process, you’ll give up and just revert back to what we have now.

I wouldn't bet against government getting out of the marriage game.
I’m interested in this free money if you want to make it interesting.

what legitimate role is there for the government in what is otherwise a private decision about how individuals choose to organize their lives?
To not know the answer to this question is to not know what marriage is.

That’s dumb. marriage is a contract that changes your legal status

Ben Shapiro is terrified of saying what he really thinks and joe Rogan is stoned.

But why?

Why does the government care if I am living with someone or I am not?

It’s you. You said that since marriage is a fundamental and not constitutionally-granted right, the government should not be involved.

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit are also fundamental and not constitutional. Therefore, your argument is silly.

so should the number of people who want to enter into a marriage be limited to 2? will the government be involved there?

Why don't you tell me what you think marriage is then that it is so godawful necessary that the government involve itself. You do realize that marriage existed for centuries without government involvement? I assure you that whether I have a religious marriage, a civil marriage, or I just sign a contract with my "spouse", the courts will enforce the contractual commitments the same way.

They don't.Unless you live in a common law state. And common law marriage is insane to me. I am unaware of a law that forbids people from living together on the basis of race or sexual orientation.

But there's nothing wrong with two people entering into a private contract to legally share their lives and join their personhood and the government enforcing that contract.

Government recognition of marriage is not about conferring "rights" upon people. It's nothing but to assist the ease of functioning in civil society for necessary things such as successions, progeny, etc.

As far as this country goes, the number is whatever we say it is, and the number is to apply to all equally (IE, can’t have polygamy for whites but not for blacks, etc). As of now, we say it’s 2. Anyone who wants that changed has my best wishes.

Of course. I never hear people call for government ending its involvement in marriage and also talk about these issues, leading me to believe that they haven’t put serious thought into the topic.

This is why I’m surprised that Shapiro thinks this way.

I don't have a problem with gays marrying.
