Style seems to be an every-other generation thing, but with new names. (Eg., peddle pushers are reissued as Caprie (sp?)pants. T-shirts come back, but with monograms, or pics. Ties go from wide to thin to wide, to ... .)
What grandma & grandma wore is the goat, but don't be caught dead dressing like your parents.
Why? After all, there are only a few variations that can be made in an article of clothing. The industry has to urge consumers to change to keep the dollars rolling in.
