This is what is going to break one side or the other. Its too bad the Repubs can't ram through something via reconciliation that pays ATC or provides one time bonuses during a shutdown.

The Republicans could end the shutdown immediately if they changed Senate rules to get rid of the filibuster on budget votes.

The Republicans will have to cave or kill the filibuster.

This pressure will increase, bigly, every day.

When the money backers start telling Republicans to act...they will.

The last government shutdown ended when Republicans folded after TSA and Air Traffic Controllers started no showing for work.
Air traffic controllers are considered "essential federal employees." Their work is critical to public safety and protecting life and property. As essential employees, they are required to continue working during the shutdown to maintain air travel safety, albeit without a paycheck.

I'd suspect any ATCs walking off their job under these circumstances run significant risk of discipline and replacement in the next few months. FAFO.

Hard to discipline if they are "sick" and its not that easy to replace them as people think.

I live on a lake in East Texas. I have the best dock for fishing at night with lights and all. Last night there were two guys, a local cop and his cousin who is a TSA agent. TSA dude is still working but for no pay. I didn't ask how long he could hold out.

Fox News said that their last paycheck will be Oct 14 and if the shutdown is not ended the first missed paycheck will be Oct 28.

Not in the case of a general walk out.

Of course not. The relevant question is "Is it possible?" and is there a risk to ATCs of dismissal and replacement being conducted over a period of months, especially as pertains to isolated workgroups (e.g., the Burbank Tower)?

That's what I find fascinating about the firing of controllers by Reagan.

How did he pull it off? How did it happen? How was it possible?

Obviously, we have a lot more planes in the air now.

But he did fire thousands of them.

ATCs know they cannot strike. They are forced to work during shutdowns without being paid. Yes, they will be paid once the shutdown is over, but how long can they last? At some point, they will have to pay their mortgages, food bills, electricity, etc. Do you expect them to keep working without pay indefinitely? Would you? No, you wouldn't.

Then do your damn job

ATC are skilled positions, a Baboon would be more competent than most TSA agents (MSY is a poster child for this)

How did Reagan fire a bunch of controllers back in the 80s? Could that be done today?

During Reagan, those Air Traffic Controllers were illegally striking; these are working but not getting paid. Some may need to work somewhere else while not getting paid to pay their bills.

Hopefully, it will be the Dems who cave since they are the ones who are putting on this play.

Do you think military ATC are not skilled positions?

Simply use military or nat guard replacements.
