Relying on a branch to government to decide if you have a right that threatens government

The court system is not your ally with regards to freedom from government.

Court appointed doctors to advise the court if you can exercise your 2nd Amendment rights?

Both sides complain about judicial activism and then want to entertain red flag laws??

All we have between us and them is Heller. Heller was 5-4. If Heller were to be heard today, it would be 5-4.

THAT is how close it is to being defined away.

(ETA: That's how important 2016 was - if HRC had been elected, Heller today would be 6-3, the other way. :letthatsinkin:)

The courts have eviscerated the 4th Amendment in the last half century. It's only a matter of time before they do the same to others.

Is there anything that can be done to curb mass shootings, in your opinion? Legit question, not trolling.

The court system

A judge “ain’t nothing but a lawyer with a robe on,” and the vast majority of attorneys are Democrats. This will not go well. Wouldn’t go well regardless but factor in the decisions being left up to a lot of leftists...sheesh.

Nobody will protect you, or stand up for you, when it threatens their own security. Believe it, until absolutely proven otherwise.

It is going to take a non-government, societal shift in belief for that to happen. The shootings are the symptom, not the cause.

Guns are just the tool being used.

I honestly don't know. That's why I asked.

That's fair.

Unfortunately, I believe there is little to be done and maintain a free society. Once we start qualifying the rights more heavily than they are now, we're subjects, not citizens.

I mean, every act taken by a lot of these shooters is illegal. Yet, the response is to disarm, after the fact, the millions who didn't do a damned thing wrong.

I mean, what is to be done to curb food poisoning, auto accident deaths or medical malpractice? All of those things cause more fatalities than mass shootings.

And there are way, way more guns in private hands than restaurants/grocery stores, automobiles or doctors.

A return to values and social mores that lead to a decent, polite society. Not an easy task because different people are going to have different definitions of what those things are.

If the media would stop distorting the truth to benefit the left wing it would be helpful also.

But it’s settled law. Look up “Starry the sky is” in your law books. The precedent was set with Heller. Even the libs accept this. It can’t be challenged. Ever.

My grandfather used to always say that. He would say "you can have freedom or security, but not both", essentially arguing the same thing you said.

ETA: Not sure why someone keeps downvoting me in this thread. Especially this post. My grandfather was the smartest person I've ever known and I highly respected his opinion. This was a compliment to Ace.

Australia enacted strict gun control laws back in 1996 and didn't have a single mass shooting until 23 years later. Other countries have had similar success, but people on the extreme right will argue that for some reason it won't work here.

Are there any differences between the US and Australia that might make such an action here less successful or practical?

They didn't have much gun violence before 1996.

They had a gun buy back program where they only got 1/5 to 1/3 of firearms. The rest weren't turned in. You think people here are going to turn in their guns because of these fricking sky screamers? This is a different time with waaay more firearms. It will not work here.

I was perma banned from a liberal cesspool. Someone quoted an AP article claiming 70% of Americans want stricter gun control. I called it BS because they polled 1000 people to represent 350 million and we have no idea who was polled. If I go to a gun range and poll 1000 members I can claim 90% of Americans want less gun control.

Liberals are a fricking disease.

Just don't argue that stricter gun control laws won't save lives, because that's complete BS, just be honest and admit you could care less about the victims (until it's one your own loved ones). All you care about is the optics of not giving one inch on the 2nd amendment.

You wanting to call your fellow Americans a disease because they hold slightly different views than you seems like you are projecting your own insecurities onto them.

The fact is that the vast majority of Americans do support stricter gun control laws. You don't have to believe polls to believe that... When was the last time a republican won the popular vote? Maybe if you don't like that fact you can go back to the country you came from!
