Are you insecure? Why would you lose any self-respect over this? You're weak if you let this guy even make you resort to such stupid decisions. He wanted you to fight because it would prove what he does/says has power over you, and he obviously got to you. If words are all it takes to get into your head then obviously beating him down won't change that.

Threads like this one makes me dream of the days of Bill Stanfill and Jake Scott, Tommy Casanova and Bert Jones, and Joe Namath and Snake Stabler.
