I think it could.
"Ban the Box" comes to mind as an example... but that related to the have you been convicted of a crime section.
Something similar, if it had support, could easily happen.
I don't personally think it will, not because of what are commonly called "racists" or "bigots", but because of those that push for inclusion at all costs. They are the real bigots, imo, because they assume failure of any pigeon-holed demographic without their "help".

That's how I see it, too.
Personally I am in favor of abolishing ethnic/race/sex checkboxes in nearly everything. The only relevance those descriptors have is if someone is looking for you or in patient treatment where some people groups have higher disposition to certain conditions.
