He is an idiot. As a military member he is well aware of how this would be received. He may be a good person (I don't know) but he doesn't make great decisions. He knew, he just didn't care. Anyone who has studied the history of blackface in theater knows why people are outraged.
It's not the same as a black person putting on whiteface. It has a long ugly history of portraying horrible stereotypes.

well I know that I will never be able to run for public office since there are plenty of photos around of when I went as Lil Jon (in black face) for Halloween like 10 years ago

There's a couple of sororities in my grandparents LSU yearbooks from the early 60s. I wanna say kappa delta, there's a pic where the ENTIRE sorority is in black face. Had me rolling the first time I saw it

Usually there is no real problem. It's probably inappropriate to use blackface, but I don't think many of the examples I've seen were harmful or insulting in any real way.

My brother went as Wayne at LSU during Halloween in full black face and dreads. Everyone white and black thought it was awesome. He had more black people ask for pics than anyone else.

He was told then "They hate us cause they ain't us" so he tried to be like em. Depending on how one acts in black face or white face, who really cares? If you act accordingly and without malice towards the respective race, who really cares? What a white guy can't dress up like Martin Luther King for Halloween?
