I've literally never come across an aggressive yellow lab.

I know a guy that has had multiple surgeries due to a harmless yellow lab. They are usually awesome dogs, but not in his case. To be fair, he adopted it from a shelter, so who knows what it’s life was like prior, but it wasn’t an issue for months on end before suddenly (and very randomly) attacking him as he was drinking his coffee on his deck one morning.

Have a friend that was bit by one while jogging in the street. Owner just let it free roam apparently.

No surgery needed. Bad scar though.

1) Its a yellow lab.

The odds of getting bitten are tiny.

Oh, I know. Labs are some of the least agressive dogs you can find.

Labradors in general are not aggressive. In fact, a study published in 2008 found that they were one of the least aggressive breeds of the group of dogs involved in the study.

They literally have to have behavioral problems to be aggressive.

I love labs, and they are generally great dogs. But they are still capable of biting you. I guess because they are such great dogs, that is it is so surprising when it happens.

Bro... I googled your quoted portion. It's from "the labrador site". They didn't even link/list the study.

If you want to discuss studies, you can generally find anything to support your position...

"Maulings by dogs can cause terrible injuries47 and death—and it is natural for those dealing with the victims to seek to address the immediate causes. However as Duffy et al (2008) wrote of their survey based data: "The substantial within-breed variation…suggests that it is inappropriate to make predictions about a given dog's propensity for aggressive behavior based solely on its breed."

If youre a grown man and unaware of the general personality of labs, yikes.

Cowards stick together it seems.

Agreed, my overall impression of the breed is that they're generally not aggressive.

That said, popular breeds attract for-profit breeders who will mate any two dogs, regardless of traits, just to sell another litter. This changes the overall breed temperament.

Also, as you've mentioned, abusive pasts can make any dog with a good temperament be aggressive.

Hell, putting one aggressive dog into a group of well-tempered dogs could cause those dogs to attack if the aggressive dog attacks (pack mentality).

I'm not defending the cop, but I'm also not calling for his job. It's a bad situation, which is why I keep harping on the fact that this family had 4 large breed dogs running amok, without any control over them.

Even though I have amazing verbal control over my GSDs, I don't just let them run around the street.

Also, looking at her yard... That's too small even for one large breed dog.

I've noticed that there are some people who know only two categories of dogs: Big and Little. They have no idea about the behavior differences between breeds. Labs are harmless but they are large and a person who fears big dogs may be scared. It's something that could be solved with a 15 minute lecture in police academy.

I'm aware of the general personality of labs.

This all started because RogerTheDogWhispererShrubber said that the lab never even hinted at any aggressive behavior.

Wanting to learn from an expert in the field, I asked Roger what would one look for if they were looking for aggressive behavior in a dog running at them after breaking from their owner's grip.

Roger then linked an unnamed study from IHeartLabs.com, so now I'm doubting he knows much on the subject.

A heartbroken North Carolina family is demanding answers after police shot and killed their family Labrador in what appears to be a catastrophic case of canine confusion.

So the cop didn't even have the correct dog.

Someone was scared of a German Shepherd so the cop killed the lab.

Figures.

I had one hostile experience with my first black lab. I walked out in the morning (sun rising) to check mail. Walking back to the house my lab was let out by the wife and he looked at me from about 100 feet. The sun was directly behind my head from the dog's perspective so my face was unrecognizable.

He bared his teeth and growled and it was very scary looking. From 70 feet I yelled 'It's me!'
He quickly ran up to me with tail wagging to apologize. But that's the look a stranger would have gotten if they entered my yard with a locked gate.

Bodycam footage shows one of the family dogs run toward Palmer and then return to the yard. A second dog, named Dixie, ran toward Officer Palmer, and he fired a gunshot that hit the animal. The dog ran away from the officer, but Palmer fired three more shots at the wounded dog that was retreating from him. The severely injured 3-and-a-half-year-old golden retriever and labrador mix is seen on police bodycam video struggling in the street.

Finished it off as it ran away. What a guy.

When I think killer breeds, I think pit bull, Akita, Doberman, and then labs and golden retrievers.

Totally coincidental it was the Lab running at him after breaking free of its owner's grip. Could have happened to any of the other Labs that were running around. Hell, he might have mistaken the Yorkie looking out the window of the neighbor's house as a GSD and shot it too.

Labs are in the top 10 breeds that cause human fatalities, already posted the link.
