If you think about it, it is ridiculous that anything that can have the effect this search engine has, isn't required to make their algorithm public.
And that is a Catch-22 argument. Theoretically the idea is they don't have to share their algorithms with anyone else (assuming they actually are more efficient), being more efficient than their rivals.
Only it doesn't really work that way. I think most people just don't particularly care about the details of a search engine, and Google is easy to remember.
