Excellent term. Lets look at some examples:
Following the cult leader in a medium where he can rapidly put out beliefs and talking points to the cult, like twitter;
Attending or watching rallies that honor the cult leader.
I agree that Trump is a cult of personality, but there are huge differences beyond the rallies. Generally speaking, the pro-Trump folks don't go around policing speech and shutting down people's rights to expression for daring to defy the party principals. There aren't any MAGA folks going around trying to block progressives from public speaking events in the name of justice and protection. That's almost always a tactic of the progressive cultists.

The primary difference IMO between the two is the methods of attaining goals. Liberals are far more dogmatic but have faith in specific institutions. Progressives are much more goal oriented and much more likely to be "the ends justify the means" types.
Discussion over free speech is one sparkling example.
When it regards policy, liberals would be far more likely to try to prop up poor people, the progressive desire is to tear down the rich or change traditional institutions.
One faction is much much more militant than the other. Liberals are bleeding heart, progressives are very very angry.

Progressivism is an odd amalgamation of different cults with little or nothing in common except a vague definition of a perceived enemy.
Often they take stances in direct opposition with one another but maintain an intrinsic ability to direct their differing outrage at their perceived enemy.
It's always amusing when an individual who identifies with more than one of these cults attempts to reconcile their own position with the positions of the two opposing cults. You wouldn't think they could but they do manage to pull it off. It's a work of performance art.
Indoctrination only explains it to a limited point. I believe a lack of mental and cognitive reasoning ability is required.

I think it's gone too far. What we really need is a couple more viable parties.

I’ll take “ranked choice ballot” for $500, Alex

You may be right, but from my anecdotal observations, the far left is sucking in previously seemingly sensible people as their nonsensical doctrine has become normalized through blatantly unfounded social science conclusions. Those two guys that wrote the bullshite social studies articles that got published in prominent journals was a huge eye opener for me. Those are the things that the left uses to justify their mainstream policies.

The parallels between certain hardcore religious groups and the "resist" and SJW crowd are uncanny.

Okay. You can have the social justice Warrior crowd and I will pick Trump voters as a whole. Because the unifying cultish red hat wearing dissenters that are Trump voters certainly fit that bill more than the vast majority of Democrats do

I've literally never seen nation wide marches in the streets by MAGA folks because they were upset over election results. The left has large scale protests constantly where most of it's participants can't express their view points rationally beyond the slightest scrutiny.

The entire fricking democrat party is down with an idiot like Maxine Waters heading the Financial Services Committee. Blind stupidity is cult trait #1.
Tell us why this is a great idea. She is a literal moron who knows absolutely nothing about the subject, not one God damned word from one God damned leftist about why her heading the Financial Services Committee is positive.
They don't give a shite because she is in the God damned cult.

We are talking at cross-purposes. You're speaking of the cult of personality. That could apply to a number of our POTUSs, Trump and Obama included. HRC has her own cult of personality.
The OP is speaking in terms of an analogy. Cult members are thoroughly indoctrinated. Progressives here in the USA are also thoroughly indoctrinated -- for their entire lives -- in school, in college, in mass media, in pop culture, etc.
See the difference? Glad I was able to help. Now stop posting during Drill.
