We can all remember this.

My sister used to work in downtown SF. She said bums would just squat and shite in the middle of the sidewalk and no one would think anything of it.

I stayed in a hotel across Burnside from Voodoo and can confirm this. Even if you aren't in line expect to be harassed.

Saw several homeless shooting heroin as well while walking around.

Yeah there's tons of them, and they're fairly aggressive.

This is the real problem. I have compassion for those with mental issues or someone just temporarily down on their luck but the explosion in homeless people seems to be fueled by younger able-bodied people who are homeless by choice or as a result of pure laziness. And they are aggressive and everywhere now. A perfectly healthy looking 30ish year old guy called my wife an "entitled white bitch" the other day because she didn't give him a cigarette. She doesn't even smoke.

I have noticed a lot more of downtown Dallas smells like piss since the Dems took over a while back.

Don’t believe me?

Walk a couple of blocks south or east of the west end

Dallas is turning into a sewer. It smells bad. Construction never ends. Traffic is awful. People refusing to speak English. Should just drop some thermobaric explosives and drop the whole town.

just got back to BR from Oregon. pretty amazing. no sales tax. great schools. great health care. low crime.

about the biggest drawback are property taxes

reading through the thread, its funny that people from Louisiana would ever mock them

No one ever said they didn't have a lot going on. I think there is a very simple explanation for at least half of your list of wonderful things. That said, even if all of those are great, it doesn't exclude them from having a very serious, business and tourism hurting homeless situation that they created for themselves.

Don't forget, the homeless problem is pretty much a Portland issue. The rest of the state has 100 times more to offer than Portland does.

Is this mostly a West Coast thing? Most of the ones in my area appear to be drug addicts that got kicked out of their homes or treatment facilities or crazies with nowhere to go.

Don't have a lot of experience in big, metropolitan cities. Most of the ones I've seen in Atlanta appear to be crazy (my wife and I got chased down the street by one in the middle of the day). Last time I was in New Orleans I saw a ton of dealers and prostitutes, but few people who genuinely appeared to live on the street.

Not sure, but just from reading this site, it seems like NOLA also has a "gutter punk" problem.

A higher percent of dual parent households for starters.

I think it kind of is. A lot of people on the west coast like to camp and hike. I think a lot of young people take advantage of their learned skills and abundance of mountains, trails, beaches, rivers, and other natural resources to travel around. I suspect that some of them eventually get a job and settle down, while it becomes a permanent or semi-permanent lifestyle for others.

These wanderers take advantage of the resources available to the homeless because it enables their lifestyles.

Are you gonna quote that, or make me click the link, which I really don’t care to do?

They wouldn’t be homeless if all the greedy rich people didn’t hoard all their money and would just give it to the disenfranchised.
