Maybe we need to reconsider what actions require that free citizens be placed under arrest by law enforcement. We have more people incarcerated than any other country in the civilized world, and we consider ourselves the 'land of the free'? Not just has law enforcement gotten out of control, but simply the preponderance of laws trying to control a free society has gotten out of control.
Yep. And, then when you add in historic racism and we know that some still operate with racial bias, you have a toxic situation that continues to be perpetuated in the black community as criminality and incarceration breeds more and more of the same in addition to perpetual family breakdown aided by government dependence and the rewarding of destructive moral behavior.

How about obey the law, stop acting like you're a victim before you are one, stop acting like someone owes you something, quit being a dickhead to LE and be above reproach. Do this and all the bullshite goes away.

Over 200k misdemeanor arrests in NY in 2013
So to answer two of my own questions:
1. He was being arrested for misdemeanor; and
2. while I can't call it common without something to compare it too, apparently misdemeanor arrests happen a lot (at least in New York).
If someone sees a breakdown of what other type of misdemeanors one can get arrested for, please post here.

Finally, there is this: There were 228,000 misdemeanor arrests in New York City in 2013, the last year for which there are audited figures, and every one of them had at least the potential to turn into an Eric Garner-like case.

Well no shite. You think a criminal is going to voluntarily appear in court?
The solution is to sanction beatings with billy clubs to force these thugs to comply. That'd put an end to this "I don't have to listen to the Popo if I don't feel like it" attitude the idiots are trending to find socially acceptable.
A cop says you're under arrest -that's the end of the story. You comply and go bitch to the judge later or sue if it was wrongful. You damn sure don't resist cause you feel like it.
fricking anarchy is next.

Not sure I would state it exactly like that, but basically I agree.

Why would he have to appear in court? Unless it's a DWI or something like that, traffic tickets don't require a court appearance or arrest.
Now, if enough tickets are left unpaid, then I can see an arrest as necessary. And maybe something like that is what happened in this case; it seems like the victim had a history of petty crime.
But given that ANY arrest can lead to bodily harm for both the cop and civilian; we should probably limit arrests to more serious issues (and in large part, I think that is what happens).

That's complete and utter bullshite and you know it. There are an infinite number of cases where people get abused by the police for no wrongdoing whatsoever.
And I'm sure you've never EVER broken the law huh?

Well the question is about Misdemeanors. There's hundreds of misdemeanors besides just traffic tickets. Some serious enough.
