so yes, we live in clown world; but that has been the case ever since Donald John Trump turned the world upside down and actually threatened the power and wealth of the entrenched power brokers

(mad at the Senators that made insider trades? well, THAT is a big part of how people like the Clinton's & Pelosi's have amassed amazing wealth -- but that is for another thread)

my wife just brought this petition to my attention -- my guess is that this petition winds up being successful (8,00 goal, already almost there -- NO, I did not sign it)

landlords and property owners are about to get fricked...

Link to petition

Governor Kay Ivey: Suspend Rent, Mortgage, & Utility Payments During the Coronavirus Crisis

To Alabama Governor Kay Ivey

COVID-19 (also known as coronavirus) has been classified as a global pandemic. Alabama already has at least 48 cases statewide. State and federal officials are encouraging people who feel sick to stay home, but many workers already struggle to make rent or mortgage payments. The choice to skip work for the sake of community health could leave them and their families unsheltered.

In order to protect the health and housing security of our community, we, the undersigned, call on Governor Ivey to act now so workers won't have to make that choice. Specifically, we call for a suspension of all rent, mortgage, and utility payments for 2 full months to allow people to do what they need to in order to take care of themselves, their loved ones, and the community.

The legacy of every public official currently serving will be determined in the next few months.

It's time to act now, and choose the right side of history. Choose the people

And how does the Governor have the power to take over ownership of my property and decide who pays and how much?

Pure unadulterated hysteria.

If they don't pay get out of my house or the state will be responsible for the rent. Either way it's vacant or they're paying.

same way they arbitrarily shut down schools and businesses

who want to be the 1st landlord in the news for "working over" granny who can't pay the rent and put her on the streets

we are stepping into dangerous times and a real class war type scenario is not as unthinkable as it was just a few short weeks ago...

This is stupid, and so are you for thinking that a google doc petition will be enforceable. It’s made it’s rounds on social media for weeks here.

I would say that this is news/discussion worthy

I am predicting that Governor Ivey (and every governor) puts something similar to this in place very soon

tell me why I am wrong

because she cannot dictate what private owners do, nor can she control the decisions of federal companies that own the loans

OK, theoretically you are correct

who is going to be the 1st landlord to buck up to an order like this?

a month ago, I would never have believed any of what we are seeing now

soo I will say this; MUCH of what we are seeing (and will see in the coming days, weeks, months) has as much to do with maintaining social order as it has to do with "helping people"

riots in the streets is actually something that could still happen

our fundamental rights and freedoms are getting tossed out the window in front of our eyes

freedom to assemble? is all but gone

what makes us so sure that property rights are that far behind??

I am pretty confident saying that a Governor can do none of that.

She can ask pretty please but that would be about it.

Just out of curiosity did your bride find this on Facebook?

probably

I just looked at the petition, just 30 shy of the 8,000 goal

BUT - on page 1 that shows 50 signatures, only ONE is from Alabama (name withheld)

my signatures are from all over the country and world

maybe, but we are living in very interesting times

if she 9or any governor) attempts something like this, my bet is that the order would be followed

The governor can however direct the sherriff and constables not to accept or enforce any evictions

Actually under emergency powers she kind of can. She throygh your state police and slong with the AG can stop the enforcement of eviction. If you as a landlord wish to make the situation worse just to prove a point or principle, have at it....I don't like your chances overall

They can refuse to enforce evictions but that is not what the petition is about.

Is she going to call New York and tell the mortgage companies what to do then hang up and call Atlanta and dictate to Southern Company they must provide free power?

They will fall on the floor laughing at her if she tries
