The White House requested that Perry meet Obama on the tarmac Wednesday as he gets off Air Force One on his way to Democratic fundraisers in Texas,

Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry refused to greet President Barack Obama at a tarmac photo-op this week, and instead challenged Obama to hold a “substantive meeting” with him to discuss the illegal immigration crisis currently engulfing states along the U.S.-Mexico border.

quote:

“I appreciate the offer to greet you at Austin-Bergstrom Airport, but a quick handshake on the tarmac will not allow for a thoughtful discussion regarding the humanitarian and national security crises enveloping the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas,” Perry wrote to Obama in a letter Monday. “I would instead offer to meet with you at any time during your visit to Texas for a substantive meeting to discuss this critical issue.”

That's not exactly true. But that hasn't stopped everyone from using it as a headline.

Well played by Perry, IMO. Seems respectful while dissing.

Its nothing but showmanship on Perry's part. Remember he is campaigning for President and the most popular Republican in Texas is Ted Cruz.

Perry is smart enough to suck in the lower IQ'd portion of Texas' conservative majority. He did the same thing in 2009 when he started making statements about Texas seceding from the Union. He is a politician first and foremost. It was a stupid move on his part because it does nothing to garner national support, but he has to try something prior to formally declaring for the Presidency because once Ted Cruz gets him in a debate, there won't be much left for Perry except for becoming the next President of his alma mater, Texas A&M. Total clown act.

even Aggies hate him these days.

He's a complete caricature of republican stereotypes and his desire to turn the major public universities in Texas into shitty degree factories is retarded.

Perhaps. But it could also bring attention to Obama ignoring the border issue while here. It could at least be more important look like he cares than raising money.

I've said for years that Perry is what the left tried to convince the world Bush was during his time in office.

These kinds of stunts have grown old. I wouldn't have asked if I were the president, but I wouldn't have declined if I were a governor.

The optics of this play well in states that Republicans have sewn up, but nowhere else.

Yeah, but it's obama. He can't walk down to the situation room when terrorists are attacking.

There is nothing arrogant about saying that Rick Perry is everything that is wrong with the republican party.

Unless you live in Texas and have dealt with him the past 15 years, you really are in no position to comment anyway. The guy so desperately wants to frick this state up.

This is as accurate a statement as I've read in a long time.

Wasn't his earlier demand that Obama meet him at the border or something like that? Is he walking that back now?

If he just refused to shake hands you may have a point but when you add this

I think it is a great way to call Obama out. Too bad that when the MSM gets a hold of this it will be Perry refuses to shake Obama's hand. End of story.

darkhorse, a problem I've noticed is that you are incapable of seeing the fault in two people at the same time in a given scenario so long as one of them agrees with you on some level. For instance, so long as someone "disses", shows up, calls out or insults Obama you have nothing bad to say about them in that particular moment. Perry, no matter what he stood for before, is in your favor at this moment.

This is a case of two dipshits, nothing more. The fact that you believe you need to "side" with one of them is indicative of your simplistic, black/white way of thinking.

We're all terribly surprised.

No. He's saying he's not g going to meet Obama at the airport for a handshake and shaming Obama for ignoring the border issue while here.

I mean, the freaking arrogance of fundraising in Texas while we are being flooded with immigrants without even stopping by the border long enough for a photo opp is outrageous.
