That's about $200 a person a month. I wonder if the money would be better spent if it were given to food kitchens, food banks, etc. Instead of to individuals. So you provide food for the poor but it's not a direct handout; rather, you are supporting charitable organizations that feed the poor.

Even if a charitable organization only feeds 100 people a month, that would be $20,000. It's not cheap to feed large groups of people but it's also not $20,000 to feed 100 people, could save the government billions.

You'd likely just create more bloat and inefficiencies. Now you have to pay the salaries of all of these people and set up multiple distribution centers.

It's well intended, but it's a terrible idea.

So you are in favor of bribing the barbarians to keep them on the other side of the gate?

Want to see grocery prices go down? Eliminate this entirely.

Remember that kerfuffle back over the summer when it was found that a bunch of conservative iNfLuEnCeRs were getting $5k/post (or some ridiculous figure) to go to bat publicly for keeping soda, chips, etc on the SNAP schedule?

It was reported at the time that Pepsi clears around $4B/year in SNAP purchases of Pepsi & Frito-Lay products, alone.

Doesn't the government give out grants? Could it work in a similar way? Obviously you wouldn't give out grants near the same amount as SNAP benefits but it could still go to helping the poor.

If it is truly a terrible idea, then I say let charities do the most legwork, not the government. Might encourage people to actually work.

Or reform SNAP so that people who are truly unable to work receive it, not those who are unwilling to work.

Really??

Do you imagine zero riots at every major and minor US city had the SNAP giveaway not been extended?

Never underestimate mutants and zombies with nothing to lose and chip on their shoulder the size of a Sequoia.

Don't worry. Elon and big balls went through SNAP and made sure there's no more waste fraud and abuse.

But we should probably cut it anyways. We need money to help out Argentina.

That's how SNAP already works. There are work requirements to receive the benefits.

I hear ya, but NGOs are busy paving the way for mass illegal invaders (while Food Banks and the usual charities are already overwhelmed.)

This is the way.

"Workfare" is not a dirty word. It is a fair and equitable arrangement.

What about just heavily restrict what it can be used on? Instead of a "black list" of prohibited items, make it a "white list" of allowed items? Rice, beans, chicken, eggs, produce, milk?

Is that also a "well intended" but "terrible" idea?

It appears the higher count of minorities in States are the ones receiving the most money.

With all the deportations there are plenty of jobs available the free-loaders can take over.

Bring it.

The band-aid must be ripped off. The status quo is untenable.
