They only got black players after USC showed up w a stud black running back (Sam Cunningham) and beat the shite out of those slow white boys.
Once bama knew they couldn't win wo black players anymore they changed their tune w the quickness.
To your question: nobody outside the state of Alabama gives a frick about a PBB statue. No one.

You have to remember, having black football players was against the rules in southern states and Texas, either through legislation or regents rules.
By the way, who had a black football player first, Bear Bryant or Shug Jordan?
Looks like Bryant was 1971 and Jordan was 1970.

This is extremely misleading and unfair to Bryant himself.

Any proof? Or does that just make you feel better because he made your school his bitch?

Coach Bryant used his influence to help insure that Legion Field not be segregated.

Not true. We were already integrated by then.

Let me guess, you probably believe that fake story of Bryant bringing Cunningham into the Alabama locker room after the game, too.

Pathetic thread. Bryant was no racist.
He gave thousands of players the chance to get an education, and he also set up The Bryant Scholarship before he died which lets all children of his former players go to BAMA for free. Some are still using it today.

No you weren't. How are you all so bad at google? It's embarrassing.

In 1971 Mitchell, along with Wilbur Jackson, became the first African-American to play football for the Crimson Tide. He started all 24 games in his two seasons at Alabama, during which time the team compiled a 21–3 record and won two Southeastern Conference championships.
quote:
In 1970, he (Sam Cunningham) was part of USC's "all-black" backfield (the first one of its kind in Division I (NCAA) history), that included quarterback Jimmy Jones and running back Clarence Davis. He had a notable debut[2] performance (135 yards, 2 touchdowns) against an all-white University of Alabama football team, as USC beat Alabama 42-21 in Birmingham on September 12, 1970. Jerry Claiborne, a former Bryant assistant, said, "Sam Cunningham did more to integrate Alabama in 60 minutes than Martin Luther King did in 20 years."[3][4]
Alabama actually got crushed by Tennessee the previous year (in 1969) 41-14. Two of the Vols’ best players—receiver Lester McLain and linebacker Jackie Walker—were black.
The first black player in the SEC was Nat Northington at Kentucky in 1967. 5 more teams added a black player before Alabama finally did in 1971. But I guess Bear Bryant just couldn't find any good black players for nearly 5 years (or 8 years if you want to count the time since it was "legal" because at the end of the 60's the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare began threatening to pull federal funding from schools not in compliance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. You may need to brush up on your Google. Wilbur Jackson was on the team as a freshman in 1970 but couldn't play because freshmen weren't allowed to play by the NCAA back then.
