Cooley seems alright (and I've always kinda preferred his tunes over Hood's or Isbell's or anyone else's).

I've always been more of a Cooley fan than DBT as a whole.

I think in Isbell's and DBT's cases, it's because they've been surrounded by nothing but music-industry liberals or leftists for years and years and they just kind of adopt that philosophy as a by-product. I know that I have certainly been politically influenced by the people I was around a lot during my 20's.

Concerning their audience, I don't believe that's the case. I would bet most of Isbell's and DBT's consumers are Republicans, at least in name.

Regardless, I think you're a mental defective if you let an actor's or musician's politics affect your enjoyment of their work.

It's probably harder to get signed to a label if you express conservative views, just like it is more difficult to make it in hollywood.

The first time I saw them at a small Houston venue a long, long time ago (around Southern Rock Opera), my buddy and I walked out laughing about how much they played up their small town Southern schtick. I think they've always overplayed that, and the SJW stuff is just a way of virtue signaling that they're some sort of different and special Southerners.

They’re just looking for an edgy cause.

I saw Cooley solo right after the 2016 election. He went on a couple frick Trump rants and told a guy in the audience to frick off when the guy tried dfeending Trump. It was pretty funny.

I haven’t listened to Isbell in about a year due to him becoming a BLM mouthpiece.

Why would I want an ex addict/alcoholic high school dropout to preach at me for 2 hours?

I grew up in rural AL also. That background doesn’t give any special insight on the plight of minorities...especially when you spent most of it getting real fukced up.

Isbell is bearable. He hasn't brought that into his live shows in my experience, save for one song that is still a catchy tune.

Patterson Hood is a douche and I refuse to support DBT after their latest album.

I love their older stuff. Southern Rock Opera is one of my all time favorite albums.
But it’s like they’ve bought into the need to apologize for their AL roots and their whiteness as well.

It’s a shame.

Like the other guy said— his average setlist has like 1-2 songs that are heavy handed with it... and rarely any comments from him...

It’s hardly a 2 hour lecture

I'm not ever surprised that any artist has liberal leanings, nor does it typically decide if I'll listen or not, but DBT and a good portion of the music that they play on Outlaw Country on Sirius is very explicitly anti-conservative and anti-Trump.

I don't mind an artist's political leanings so long as he doesn't go overboard and push them on me with the music, but DBT has jumped the shark big time.

It's especially stupid, imo, since their demo is 99% Conservative but they're singing anti-Conservative shite. Makes no sense to me.

I've been seeing DBT since 2001. Their core fanbase is anything but 99% conservative. Probably closer to the opposite actually. They picked up a lot of the Southern frat boy conservative crowd in the mid 2000's, but a lot of them bailed when Isbell left the band.

And they've always been political, and always been liberal. Their latest album is definitely more political than any of their other ones, but most of their albums have at least one or two songs on there with a political message.

I agree. I don't think they've ever hid their politics. But it was never spoon fed to their fans as blatantly as "American Band."

I still enjoy their music, as I do Isbell's. I also like Neil Young, Jimmy Buffett, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Jerry Jeff Walker...all flaming liberals.

As a conservative, I shape my views by educating myself and my life experiences. I try to listen and understand views of others, and I blatantly call out those with evil views (communism, Marxism, etc.). I don't believe in social justice, but I do believe in giving everyone a chance.

Point is, I've learned to not care what some artist thinks about politics. Most of them are uneducated anyway. And I tend to shy away from going to see folks like that preach any kind of politics to me.

Jason Isbell's latest album has one political song on it. The DBT's have been telling conservatives not to go to their shows or buy their music. There is a difference.

This is important to remember. The vast majority of them aren't especially well-read or educated on any number of issues.

It's why I said earlier that you're a moron if you let artists influence your political views.
