It probably does, yes, because people in the red color often yell “pedophile” at anyone that’s LGBT. If I had the choice to live somewhere where my neighbors didn’t accuse me of being a pedophile I would. You would too.
FWIW: Oklahoma, the only state in the country to go completely red in every district:
53% support gay marriage,
64% support anti-discrimination laws protecting LGBT, and
51% support laws barring private business to withhold services from LGBT based on religious views (this is the gay cake thing).

So even in OK most people aren’t on board with the outright “Othering” of LGBT people.

Well RON signed the infamous Don't Say Gay! bill... that somehow played to an audience in Florida, which in Miami and Key West has arguably the largest LGBT enclaves in the land

I know, and am friends with, gay people who are politically conservative minded and not at all down with the "TQIAP++" agenda.
And the "identifying as" trend, is exactly that. A trend. It is a popular colloquialist practice. Part of being young is rebellion, and pretending you're "different" to be a part of that rebellion can be tempting. Most people outgrow it once they face some actual adversity and realize that their "identity" means shite.
