The engines are better, maintenance practices are much better, navigation is a million times easier now due to technology. But the interface between the pilots and the systems can be complex and confusing and counterintuitive. Every pilot that has flown a modern aircraft has at said “WTF is it doing now?” at some point.

Boeing and Airbus both make great and safe airplanes, although there appears to be a major issue with the new 737 MAX. But at some point the pilot needs the ability to just kick off the autopilot and fly the plane himself, which apparently is an issue with the 737.

Yes, but each country has different safety standards when it comes to training. Indonesia wasn’t even allowed to fly their jets to the US until recently because they were crashing planes everyday. I’m not sure about the 737. I guess we’ll see what the investigation turns up this time.

As a pilot I partly agree, one of the biggest issues we face is automation dependency and not knowing what the airplane is trying to do versus what you are intending to do. Lots of unfortunate stories out there of the airplane flying the pilots and not the other way around.

Well, he's in his mid-seventies, after all. Can't really expect his generation to understand modern technology.

The tweet didn’t say he was against technology. If that’s what you got from that then you lack reading comprehension and the ability to put things in context.

Nah, only idiots want to replace the plane with a rail system.

I think his point, is that computer controls can't replace a pilot, and automation of EVERYTHING, is a bad idea.

I’m sorry, but this is incredibly dumb. Computer error is far less frequent than human error, and our air travel has never been safer because of it. Trump badly misses the mark here.

The evidence says air travel, big rigs, and trains are way safer than the "simpler days."

But I hope the prez never changes. His riffs are classic.

He's got a point. The 737 airframe is 50+ years old, and they're trying to squeeze a giant pair of engines on it that are so large, they can't even be mounted under the wings, and have to hang forward.

This is what caused the need for the MCAS in the first place; the pilots can't control the aircraft without software assistance.

737-200: Not even the first version, but you can see the difference..

It's pretty obvious. Reliance on computer assistance is not a good thing. Pilots should be able to man an aircraft if need be. That was the point. It was clear. You aren't going to be spoonfed everything. You have a brain, start using it.

All true. We have very few “memory items” (emergency procedures that are immediately implemented without reference to a checklist) on the airplane I fly but one of them is to turn off certain flight control computers to make it fly like a traditional (think analog v digital) aircraft.

The 737 is an interesting case study. Boeing took a very good initial design and kept making it larger while keeping the cockpit instrumentation mostly the same due to the ‘Southwest affect’. This sold many aircraft due to the cost savings but in the early recent crash findings it appears they tried to add some technology that is unknown or little known to many operators or their pilots to keep up with the growth of the jet.
This will get really interesting for Boeing.
Today the UK banned the operation of the 737 Max, following China, France, and Germany.
The US has 3 operators of the Max; SWA (largest US fleet), AA, and UAL(larger Max 9 variation).

My post didn't say he was against technology, either. Speaking of the lack of reading comprehension...

What's obvious is that he would prefer a human pilot over autopilot, when statistics show, by a large margin, that humans make many more errors than computers.

He's way off base here, but the Trump ball suckers will derp right with him every time.

I'm sure he would rather an abacus to a computer as well. Because computers are becoming way too complicated.

What makes you think he doesn’t understand technology? There’s a high probability he understands aviation technology much better than you do.

I have a flight booked on a 737 MAX in a few months.

I hope they ground that shite.
