"Certainly overstated"? What numbers do you believe to be the "true" number? In the last few mths of the war alone, 400,000 Hungarian Jews alone were gassed. Rudolph Hoess, commandant of Auschwitz, in his diary notes admitted to the numbers of deaths at his camp: in the end, 10,000 Jews a day were gassed. At Babi Yar, 30,000 Jews were murdered by rifles in 3 days. The commandants of Sobibor & Treblinka confirmed their numbers. When the Warsaw Ghetto was liquidated, where did those thousands of Jews disappear? As for the tattooed numbers, only Auschwitz replaced Jewish & other prisoners names with tattoes.

As of the overall kill count, it was pretty big news when they replaced the '4.1 million' plaque at Auschwitz and changed it to 1 million. I don't see how you'd have missed that one.
