USA Today Article

quote:

COLUMBUS — Ohio's GOP-controlled House passed a bill Wednesday to ban abortions after a fetal diagnosis of Down syndrome.

The proposal, which passed 63-30, would penalize doctors who perform those types of abortions.

quote:

"Their right to life should be protected," said GOP Rep. Derek Merrin of Monclova Township, Ohio, a sponsor of the proposed ban. "Individuals with Down syndrome are truly treasures."

American women choose to terminate pregnancies 50% to 85% of the time after a Down syndrome diagnosis, according to a study published in 2012 in the medical journal Prenatal Diagnosis.

quote:

Physicians who violate the proposed ban would face a fourth-degree felony, punishable by up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine. They could also lose their license to practice medicine and face lawsuits if the woman is injured or dies because of the prohibited abortion.

quote:

Women who have abortions knowing that the fetus has been diagnosed with Down syndrome would face no penalties under the bill. Democrats tried to add language that would prevent women from being forced to disclose a fetal Down syndrome diagnosis.

quote:

Only three states — Indiana, Louisiana and North Dakota — have passed laws to ban abortions after diagnoses of genetic abnormalities. A federal judge found Indiana's law to be unconstitutional and Louisiana's law is facing a legal challenge.

Frank Stephens, a man with Down’s Syndrome gives a speech on the barbarity of abortions

This bill was passed in the House of Ohio only, Senate needs to pass it too. I hope LA doesn’t seem the bill unconstitutional, abortion is abhorrent.

SIAP, searched and found nothing.

How early can down syndrome be detected?

For the record, I like this post. Having a baby with downs is not an excuse to abort the pregnancy.

That's all well and good, and I'm no cheerleader of abortion, but it's clearly going to be struck down by the courts the first time it's challenged. It'll be a layup for some aspiring attorney.

Maybe I’m confused, but does this mean that it's illegal to abort if testing indicates Down Syndrome but it's completely legal if the testing doesn't indicate any genetic disorders? That doesn't make a lot of sense.

Why would people want to kill a mongoloid baby anyways? Mongoloids are always so happy!

Well I don’t know if they are generally more happy than those without Down Syndrome, but they experience the range of emotions like anybody else and respond to the external environment similarly.

Like any child, a loving and caring environment will make them more likely to be happy, but the opposite environment will make them more likely to have maladaptive emotions and behaviors.

In other words, your daughter probably has that positive environment to make her happy, but in general, those with Down Syndrome are most assuredly not always happy, because it’s human nature afterall.

Bringing attention to routine extermination of disabled people is never a waste of time.
