re: Odds that we get a Dem speaker of the house?

It won’t be a Dem Speaker, but there are some tricks the Dems could pull to make it interesting. They could all abstain from voting if they think McCarthy doesn’t have the votes. Then just sit back and watch the infighting.

The ones holding out want their palms greased. Many deals will be made.

If they all abstain, McCarthy would win. They need to vote for someone else to keep it interesting.
Again, you don’t need a majority of the House (218) to win….just a majority of votes cast. Like I said in my last post, McCarthy will win eventually because the Freedom Caucus and some Dems will eventually abstain

It wouldn’t take any Republicans voting for a Dem. It would just have to be enough Republicans not voting to let the Dems have the majority of the votes.

Sorry, I meant vote Present. Those votes count towards the total from what I understand.

probably need a code to represent for those whose allegiance to party leads them to call Treason for politicians not buying into some right wing podcasters ideas.
"treason-p."
its not really treason but my heart is heavy my elected official votes for bills I wouldn't and he'd rather not cut the new Medicare plan to allow bulk prices for the 10 most commonly prescribed medicines. who's against this? big pharma and those they buy.
where does mtg stand on drug price reduction for retired people? where do you stand Mike?

Well, to be clear, the Speaker is voted in a named vote. Meaning everyone votes for a name, not yes/no vote on individuals. If you abstain or vote Present, that will not count. However, all the Dems could write Nancy Pelosi or whoever, to disrupt for a bit. Until it’s clear no challenge will be made to McCarty - then he will be elected

A GOPe border sitter would be much more motivated to stay Republican and sell his votes Manchin style.

Which is exactly what the democRATS would like.

do you think Dems could peel off 5-6 GOPe to support a “moderate” Dem instead of a “far right” speaker?
Zero percent chance of that happening but boy it would be one of the most 2022 republican things that could happen.

the entire mtg clique are doing that today.
we want (list)
or we don't choose you Kevin.
no one guy has Manchin power because the R house majority is somewhere from 222 to 213 that's 5 guys down to no worse than 220 to 215. that's 3 guys.

Zero chance for a Dem speaker. Same thing happens every time a chamber changes parties. Even happened to Pelosi. Remember the rebellion by the squad?

I agree with everything you said here except that some dems will abstain. Why would a dem abstain? The house majority is close enough that if all the dems vote for whoever the dem party nominates (whether it be Pelosi or Jefferies or whoever), and if enough Freedom Caucus members no vote or vote for whoever besides McCarthy, then couldn't the dems have the majority of votes present and elect an dem for speaker?
