I mean thats possible I guess, but they would need a TON of leverage, as already shown, Trumps agents have lined up in defense of him.
To me it would make more sense for the FBI try and flip a MAL worker

This is correct. Also plausible, though, is the possibility that the plant has been in place from the very beginning, and just wasn't activated until necessary.
We've all seen people who seem so loyal and hardcore, that ultimately end up being pure swamp...
