And this is from 2019, it’s probably much worse now with inflation. I found this part surprising as well:

That was Bush.
No, a lot of private lenders left the FFELP program during the Bush recession, but between Clinton in 1993 with direct loan laws, and Obama in 2010, when he eliminated FFELP altogether, the debt has been driven to almost 2 trillion.
