I've judged Art Competitions (relatively small), and have awarded Paintings that I really didn't personally like.
Having taken a fresh look at the Pieces, I think that especially Michelle's...is spot on. Michelle finds it very hard to live with her Worldview; She feels truly aggrieved, hurt, and is contemptuous toward those who reject Her Husband's Worldview and seek to destroy His moral/public credibility.
This Artwork perfectly portrays the psychology above. And it does so in such a simplistic (technical) handling, that the simplicity reads as a form of disrespect, in telling a 'tale' not even worthy of respect. The Artist own (personally tortured and Racially aggrieved) Worldview bleeds through; He is a perfect 'messenger' to relay both His own and the Obama's feelings. Though even the Artist may not realize the depth and source of His own Artistic impetus.
Barack, or any of the Artist's other work....take away the 'fluff' and 'bling' (flowers), and what have you got.
I would like to believe that deep down under all of the Obama's grievance-based psyches and the monumental dynamics therein played out in the biggest of all inflammatory social forums (POTUS), that both They and the Artist would have chosen to portray the best of their intentions...as opposed to the most conflicted.
If I had been chosen to paint/pose Obama, and desired to push the Artistic envelope, for the common good....I would have asked Obama to...kneel, and reflect on the love He had for His children...and then further reflect on His actions and beliefs in His tenure as the National 'Father'. No 'flowers'...just eyes.
Another day glued to the dirt...hurtling through infinite space.

Official portraits are now reduced to some depiction of the psyche of the person?
Really.
Really.

I take it that you are not big on art, tm. Whatever.

All said, the Obamas are two of the most profound individuals in this era. As such, the psychological dynamics as relating to the physical characteristics of their human form...is largely lost in the 'fluff'. The Artists should have viewed a Rembrandt, or other Master portrait artist to envision the potential that good portraiture can relate.
Maybe it was their artistic intent to create a (metaphorical) controversial image, wherein the Subject is lost. If that is so...then the Work is a success.
Like the Obama's tenure...so much potential...so much lost. Disappointing. IMO. Of course - reality and art being subjective - I acquiesce to the moral axiom of lending mutual respect. To each their own.
