NYT: Russia investigation began on a tip from Australia

Matt Apuzzo, who broke the Strzok texts, is on this byline. Just to preempt the obvious catchphrase.

During a night of heavy drinking at an upscale London bar in May 2016, George Papadopoulos, a young foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, made a startling revelation to Australia’s top diplomat in Britain: Russia had political dirt on Hillary Clinton.
About three weeks earlier, Mr. Papadopoulos had been told that Moscow had thousands of emails that would embarrass Mrs. Clinton, apparently stolen in an effort to try to damage her campaign.
Exactly how much Mr. Papadopoulos said that night at the Kensington Wine Rooms with the Australian, Alexander Downer, is unclear. But two months later, when leaked Democratic emails began appearing online, Australian officials passed the information about Mr. Papadopoulos to their American counterparts, according to four current and former American and foreign officials with direct knowledge of the Australians’ role.
...
The information that Mr. Papadopoulos gave to the Australians answers one of the lingering mysteries of the past year: What so alarmed American officials to provoke the F.B.I. to open a counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign months before the presidential election?
It was not, as Mr. Trump and other politicians have alleged, a dossier compiled by a former British spy hired by a rival campaign. Instead, it was firsthand information from one of America’s closest intelligence allies.

So Russia had HRC emails all along and her dirty dealings hurt her campaign?

Yeah, because Russia knew they paid off the Clinton's for U1. They probably had a bunch of other shite on the Clintons because they are global criminals.

So it's your contention that the fbi began spying on a presidential campaign because a low level aid told someone in a bar that he thinks Russia had HRCs emails?
Lots of people thought that.
Eta: the charges of shenanigans between the Clintons and Russia are far older than this campaign. This is a heckuva reach.

Anyone with a functioning brain knew the Russians and others had Hillary's emails when we discovered she was using an unsecured server in her fricking home.
Even the crooked FBI says so.

Assange didn't announce that he had Clinton emails until June 12, 2016.

In the weeks leading up to the election, dems were enjoying a comfortable lead in the polls and demanding vehemently that the election could not be corrupted.
I guess democrats are counting on America coming down with a bad case of mass amnesia.

When it was announced, anyone who knows anything about computer security knew she'd been hacked.
I appears you're one of the ones I mentioned without a functioning brain.

quote:this will be really easy to settle. Release the fisa warrant application and let's see what was referenced. If this bought and paid for tabloid dossier was the basis, then at least some folks in the doj and FBI have to be prosecuted for perpetrating a fraud on the court, assuming they did not also reveal the source of the dossier. If they did tell the judge where it came from and he/she granted it anyway, then we know it's time to disband the whole fisa court process, because there are effectively no protections

Assange has the 33k deleted emails?
Not sure what Volhalla is getting at here, but the FBI confirmed, in their investigation that her server was compromised.
Eta. They would have known this in May since the investigation was wrapped up by June 5.

These threads are starting to remind me of the non stop Benghazi foolishness. What do you think changes with this?
