A simmering dispute inside New York City’s Democratic Party erupted into public view this week after Queens Borough President Donovan Richards sharply criticized the Democratic Socialists of America, accusing the organization of advancing a form of “white supremacy” despite its progressive platform.

Richards made the comments on social media following a New York Times report examining tensions between Democratic Socialists and Black and Latino elected officials in New York. Responding to the debate, Richards wrote, “White supremacy comes in all forms,” before later sharing a Malcolm X quotation criticizing what he described as the dangers of white liberalism.

The exchange quickly became the latest flashpoint in a broader struggle over the future direction of New York City’s Democratic Party.
