There have been 10,000 TOTAL in New York state (and only like 400 are from outside the city.)

It was about 3700 probable cases that he added. That number is not being used at the state level.
In all likelihood it is legit and just shows how hard hit NYC was early on.

And it can be equally argued that deaths are being undercounted because people are dying in their homes and not being added to the totals, or dying from certain things like cardiac arrest which is increasingly looking to be a possible side effect of Covid but have largely not been counted.
What I found strange is how our best attempts to quantify deaths from this thing has become partisan, and one side believes 100% of the numbers are accurate and the other side believes 100% of the numbers are fake.
It's somewhere in between. Yes, total deaths are more than double the usual in New York City (LINK) including cardiac arrests that aren't being counted as Covid (LINK) which cannot be a coincidence. On the other hand, there has got to be overcounting where patients who died, and would have died, from other causes are counted as Covid deaths because they tested positive for the virus.
These numbers are never going to be perfect! But it's ridiculous to believe some conspiracy about the numbers being manipulated to be worse. They are already bad enough.
I keep seeing questions like "what if they would have died from cancer 5 days later without Covid, is it still a Covid death??" like it's a gotcha question. Yeah, it's still a Covid death, just like a terminally ill patient getting run over by a bus is still a bus death.
A distressing amount of this vitriol is just because you hate liberals and New York City is full of liberals. It's sick.

I know everyone thinks it’s a big hoax but my gf’s family is from NY and they had a close family friend pass this morning. And have known three other people who have died in the last couple weeks.
