I get all that. It’s the “if trump can be removed” part that I think they’re pissing in the wind on

Or they could’ve just remain non-political and bet on those 7,000,000,000 pairs of feet anyway.

If you figure that about 40% of people in the US support Trump that is about 132 million pair of feet or 2% of global shoe market.

In a round about way you are supporting the point in the OP.

Trump is a MASSIVE risk to Nike's business model in terms of tariffs and availability of cheap labor. How do you get rid of that risk? You remove Trump. By siding with Kaepernick and gun grabbing you strengthen the resistance against Trump.

As you infer the risk of Kaepernick and gun grabbing is small...at least small in comparison to the risk of Trump.

They are being presented with a larger resist strategy. Nike and Levis are now partners in the larger "resist" strategy. Their reward if the strategy is successful is no to low Chinese tariffs and no sanctions on NK slave labor.

How the hell do they afford $200 shoes?

They have no fixed expenses. All income is disposable income. And they dispose of it.

How will they have tariffs on their goods when their factories are in China?

When they import their goods to the U.S.

ETA: approximately 45% of Nike's sale are in the U.S.

That doesn’t help your overall argument. Kaepernick is a foil for Trump. He’s not legitimate political opposition. Nike propping him up doesn’t hurt Trump.

I see that point however the SJW/Democrats will support Nike's business model in the long run for this short run political resistance.

Interesting theory; however, nothing is going to stop Trump's trade policies.

In short I think they view their main risk as Trump. Even if the Republicans control the White House after Trump low to no Chinese tariffs and cheap labor via NK will continue.

A Mike Pence, Kamala Harris or Marco Rubio president are safe bets for Nike.
