That's not how discovery works.

The kids lawyers will have to show a specific loss directly related to the stories they ran.

50 mil that gives him a million per year til a little past retirement age.

That said, as a bystander I’d be fine with him settling for a lot less as long as some Hollywood horribles get taken to the woodshed.

Lin Wood will be suing dozens of companies and individuals as a result of the media coverage of Sandmann. Getting a settlement against one of the most high profile Defendants in your first case is huge.

WaPo has the money to litigate this to either summary judgment or a verdict. Losing on summary judgment would be a huge blow to the other suits that will be filed against future Defendants. I believe their strategy is to get an 8 figure settlement from WaPo and then use that as leverage to obtain settlements from your other news outlets and celebrities.

Wapo will say that the trip was a political trip that the school approved by allowing the students to wear political hats, the red MAGA ones.

If it was a political rally that the kids were part of, then it means that the catholic school and catholic archdiocese will lose their tax except status for sponsoring this.

The school will force the kid not to follow through on this lawsuit, and it will be a noisemaker for the lawyers with no real result.

I think the school is going to take a very passive position on this one.

One of the UVA lawsuits settled for about 7% of the demand.

I think he'll get over a million, but I'll be surprised if it is 8 figures.

No. No, it doesn't.

Besides, it wasn't a political rally. It was a pro-life rally. Either way, they aren't losing their tax-exempt status.

First, I should say that I attended catholic school from 1-12 grades and still love and support my school both financially and by volunteering my time.

However, if I were the Sandman’s I would tell those bigs at the school- who when this broke initially turned on him with their comments- when he probably could have used their support the most- to get fricked and hopefully laugh my way to the bank.

The kid got death threats. These threats came from all over the country. They had to close down his school for a week because of the threats it was getting. The post built itself as the "Newspaper of Record" in this country. Are they now going to argue that none of these left wing nut jobs (aka, your normal every day f*cking Democrat) read their far left wing whack job propaganda?

That alone opens this case up to full f*cking discovery.

I don’t think Wood is in this to settle prematurely. Not to mention prolonged publicity of this case is a nightmare for a supposedly objective and ambivalent news outlet and its owner.
Negative publicity can cause $250mm in lost market cap for Amazon on its own if Bezos continues to take a hit as a result of this.

There is no loss to the kid's income or potential income bc of the incident.

He was portrayed as a racist thug all over the news. Would definitely effect his future job prospects or even acceptance to college. Damn sure a lot of emotional stress because of the medias coverage. Celebrities were offering money for people to punch him in the face.

I’m going to say under.

I’ll say $1.5 million aggregate from all defendants.

The best libel lawyer in country didn't decide to take this case pro bono to settle for this.
