Bloomberg

Albany, N.Y. (AP) -- Investigators in New York state issued a subpoena to Michael Cohen as part of their probe into the Trump Foundation, an official with Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration confirmed to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The subpoena was issued after Cohen's attorney said his client has information of interest to both state and federal prosecutors. As Trump's longtime lawyer and self-described "fixer," Cohen could potentially be a significant source of information for state investigators looking into whether Trump or his charity broke state law or lied about their tax liability.

"We can confirm that a subpoena has been issued to Michael Cohen for relevant information in light of the public disclosures made yesterday," said James Gazzale, a spokesman for the state's tax department.

If evidence of alleged crimes is found, the matter could be referred to prosecutors, who could pursue criminal charges and seek the release of Trump's tax returns. Anyone charged with a state crime in relation to the investigation

I just love someone who was paid to lie, is also the same person who says he needs to get paid to tell the truth. What an upstanding individual.

Folks, the bigger issue is the loss of privacy between counselor and client.

I have talked to my attorney like he is my priest - I would be highly upset if that privligaed information was extracted by a federal prosecutor because the leverage of the feds was simply to great any my attorney folded.

We are entering dangerous waters - the expectation of privacy with our legal counsel is a significant right in this nation.

Democrats would destroy every civil liberty we have to oust Trump, who is essentially a centrist, Gerald Ford Republican. It boggles the mind.

To be fair, IF the conversation is in furtherance of a criminal act, then the privilege is busted. THAT is the allegation. I am not saying they are correct.

So, if I tell my attorney that I committed a crime....privilege. IF I and my attorney plan a crime together..no privilege.

You kissed civil liberties Aloha when you did nothing after bush2/cheney govt passed patriot act.

Only two senators speak against it. Sen Paul, R-ky, Sen Sanders Vt-I.

Dems like Obama moaned and groaned about the Patriot Act but once in control they expanded it.

. . . as in surprised? You're smarter than this. He's the canary with their favorite tune.

It'd be more surprising if New York didn't subpoena him.

I never voted for Bush. And your boy Obama expanded surveillance powers during his 8 year term and the civil libertarians like myself were the only one's complaining, while the partisan leftists cheered on the surveillance state when a Democrat was in charge.

You do realize attorney client privilege doesn't exist when you commit crimes with them.

The real question, is why Trump screwed over his fixer. That was the one guy he should've put on his 2020 campaign payroll.
