Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration may have improperly diverted millions of dollars in property taxes meant for schools, flood protection, drainage, public safety and neighborhood improvements to several state retirement systems.

That’s according to a lawyer for the Downtown Development District and documents filed in its lawsuit seeking a refund of about $400,000.

According to state Supreme Court rulings and an Attorney General’s Office opinion, local governments are not allowed to use property taxes for expenses not approved by voters. However, from at least 2014 to 2016, the city used between $3.7 million and $4.2 million of those taxes to contribute to state pension funds.

quote:

Under state law, the city is obligated to contribute to several state-administered pension funds, including those for employees of the local district attorney's and sheriff’s offices.

The city “passed on its obligations to other tax recipients,” Aaron said. That’s against the law, he said, because voters didn’t authorize those taxes to be used for those pensions. “If the tax is for a special purpose, it can only be used for that purpose.”

If Mitch only diverted 4MM I would be shocked.

The stories are about to start rolling in.

I’d be more shocked if they ran a news report saying this hadn’t happened.

If they diverted $3.7-$4.2mil to pension funds why would the lawyer just ask for $400,000 to be paid back?

DDD is only suing for their portion of the taxes.

A loss opens up the floodgates for every other entity who had money diverted to sue.

It will be sooner than that.

I have a feeling the new mayor will be like SWB and not competent enough to paper over her errors for 4+ years.

When you have a body that is so infected as the government of the great city of New Orleans - how does one distinguish one bit of diseased and necrotic flesh from another?

Serious question.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul, because Mitch and the Bitch Gang stole Paul’s money!

Another Orleans major going to jail!

Meanwhile the worse schools in the state get worse.
Flood protection and drainage get so bad that 100 years floods happen every other year.
Public safety, don’t make me laugh! New Orleans is a national murder rate contender.

But destroy a little Southern heritage & MSM starts talking how presidential you are!
