Did you know that we almost annexed all of Mexico after the Mexican American War? In fact, the border that was agreed upon in the Mexican Cession wasn’t even the border DC instructed their ambassador to procure. The ambassador had actually been fired for being too pro-Mexican, but before he could be forcefully removed from Mexico City, he purposely negotiated a less favorable treaty to spite the President. Congress, just wanting the expensive war to be over, quickly signed the treaty.

The U.S. easily could have been awarded FAR more of northern Mexico, and probably all of Baja California as well. It’s probably good that the U.S. didn’t attempt to govern the Yukitan or the central plateau. The U.S. would have been fighting off rebels for decades, if not centuries.
