Cmdr. Cameron Yaste, the Commanding Officer of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56), was recently photographed shooting a 5.56×45mm M4 carbine with the optics installed backward.

The now-deleted image and press release on the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service website featured Yaste shooting the M4 with the Trijicon VCOG scope installed backward while pointed at a giant target balloon.

Our resident gun experts in the media would have never known this. They just know that gun looks scary, and a white man was using it, which makes it an assault gun.

Someday, this dude will be on CNN talking about how AR-15s are "weapons of war" and they'll pump him up as a weapons expert.

Major General Paul Eaton was the commander in charge of training Iraqi troops during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He knows his weapons.

I didn't scroll down past the first photo or read the caption above it, and stared at it for 5 minutes thinking, it looks right to me, what kind of scope is that then?

If you look at the guy shooting, look at his trigger finger and how he’s smashing that trigger back, scope wouldn’t matter at that rate and you can tell rounds are going in different directions by his finger squeeze

Sometimes, the jokes write themselves.

The only thing missing is him setting his own ship on fire.

Years ago a former Army LTG (Hertling) did a piece for CNN or something and he clearly had no idea how to properly handle a rifle and also uttered the phrase, "full semi-automatic".

If you zoom in to the selector switch, I think he's on auto...with a backwards mounted LPVO.

That's more embarrassing than some skipper not knowing the arse end of a rifle he hasn't handled since basic training. That picture is on the armorer (or whatever the Navy calls them) who configured the damn thing. The officer was just handed a gun for a photo op.

Dude mounted that rifle and thought 'gee that target is really far away!'.
