The statute/memorial removal movement definitely goes too far by, for example, drawing a bright line against any historical figure who may have owned a slave or indirectly profited from slavery; but this was an easy one.

NBF was a southerner. He was one of us. And we are the descendants of these people.

Due to his history, I don't disagree with this at all. However, I do still think it's hard to judge historical figures by the morals of today.

“Mostly blacks who were killed”
Those black Yankee soldiers had specifically wanted to attack Memphis and had been given the opportunity to surrender by the Confederate forces and they did not.
Nice try chump.

Not just on the Civil War either.
Totally agree. That's why I ask, research, study, and not believe it because it's in print somewhere. Anyone can pen.

I am, doesn't bother me they removed him. We have other people more deserving.

It can, it is also a deeply red state, so we can add someone else we like better.

He was, but he isn't the best person to honor.

4. He was a democrat, so I don't mind it being removed, but it should stay to remind the democrats.
Yep, but nah, we shouldn't leave him there.

I have zero problem with this either. I see that we've got some folks downplaying Forrest's role at Fort Pillow. The wannabe Banastre Tarleton (Buford's massacre?) in command and failed to control his troops. No downplaying that. This failure led to the murder of numerous (white) native-born Tennesseans serving in Union units (13th Tenn Cavalry) & USCT. Pretty silly that he's so revered. Study the man's tactics. No need to worship him otherwise. Also, replace him with a bust of David Farragut.

Fort Pillow was wartime propaganda.
Full stop.

And you choose the man who betrayed and fought against his own people?
That’s astonishing.

Wartime propaganda? Similar to the post-war propaganda that the war was not about slavery? Possibly the propaganda that the Confederacy didn't have huge pockets of dissenters? Hell, even huge swaths of Northern Alabama had Unionists. Funny that Farragut is labeled the traitor and not the Secesh.

Rip down every Confederate statue. They were all Democrats, after all. Good riddance.

Did Forrest order the killing of surrendering black troops? Yes or no?
Did Forrest offer unconditional surrender to all troops prior to the siege of the fort? Yes or no?
Was Forrest inside the fort when the majority of the fighting was happening? Yes or no?
Were black soldiers that drowned in the Mississippi River while fleeing counted in the “massacre”? Yes or no?

East Tennessee was very pro union throughout the war, Knoxville area was a very divided town about it.
Maybe a bit salty he fricked up ya'll forts down there?
I grew up near Ft Jackson, but graduated from Farragut High.

Then you are not a southerner. You are not one of us.
