Conflicting reports, but it seems to have had a very high trajectory.

30 minutes since first posted and I have seen some estimates it could be in New York in 41 minutes... If they are capable...

So, west coast, HI, or AK...

ballistic missiles aren't designed to "land somewhere", although it appears that it did land somewhere in the waters near Japan.

cnbc link

Typically, the missiles are solid rocket fuel based with boosters that burn up and fall away after the motors get the missile to the intended heights. They must have launched a different kind of missile.

So what does all this mean? Was this a practice or like the last one they shot over Japan or is it deadly? I don’t know much about missiles. ballistic missiles just explode in the air and do what??

well, they fire ballistics.

thing of them as a revolver. the butt of the gun is loaded with solid missile fuel. the fuel burns up as it delivers the missile up into (or past?) the atmosphere to a point where it can then fire it's bullets down on the targets. only the bullets are nukes. that's why I'm confused about the wording that is being used about the "missile landing" in the ocean. Do they mean the casings that housed the fuel? Do they mean that it was a half-assed launch that wasn't designed to go into space?

I don’t think your definition of ballistic is correct for a ballistic missile. I believe it has to do with missile trajectory.

Yes, you are correct. I always thought it was in reference to the way the payload was delivered, but after further review it is based on the fact that most of the light is unpowered and unguided.

My knowledge is only really focused on the Tridents where the motor stages burn out individually and all that is left is the front end carrying the payloads.

Return fire (counter battery). 3MT should do it.......

ETA: It realy is time to respond in some manner. I suggest a precision strike on the US Pueblo. Sink that bitch right where it sits. Show them about precision guidance.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ordered an emergency meeting of Cabinet ministers following the launch, North Korea's first since Sept. 15, when one flew over northern Japan and into the Pacific Ocean.

"A missile was launched from North Korea which appears to have landed within Japan's exclusive economic zone," Abe's office tweeted. "As soon as new information comes in, we will let you know."

It landed in Sea of Japan and flew over part of Hokkaido, which is their northern island.

South Korea Fires Back
LINK
quote:

North Korea launched the missile at around 3am local time (6pm GMT), sparking a furious response from Seoul. Within minutes of North Korea's ICBM launch, South Korea had fired its own missile launch in retaliation. The North Korean missile was fired eastwards from the hermit state. The missile landed about 210km west of Japan's Kyurokujima island, Tokyo said. Japanese media reports the missile was in the air for 50 minutes - indicating a very high altitude flight path. It travelled east for around 620 miles and to an altitude of 2,500 miles before crashing into the Sea of Japan.

It was an ICBM. Given the info below and flight time of 50 minutes, it could easily reach the east coast of the US.

Japan’s defense minister Onodera now says he can only confirm ONE missile. 4000km altitude, ICBM class

Lucas Tomlinson? @LucasFoxNews
South Korea's @YonhapNews says North Korea's ICBM flew roughly 2,800 miles into space, the highest missile test to date. Note: NASA's international space station orbits earth only 250 miles up in space
