The tech used may not be identical but is comparable. Musk is launching and reusing rockets every 5 days. The no limit budget nasa folks have scrubbed the mission twice now and may defer till next year.

This is a great comparison of private enterprise and government capability

NASA suffers from the same thing most government programs do.

Crippling bureaucracy, zero profit motive, and a culture that favors process over results.

And 1/2 the country believes the government should provide your healthcare.

NASA fanboys will say even the space shuttle had issues.

Well yeah, but they also didn’t spend billions on old technology to do it.

I would love to know the levels of diversity now vs 50 years ago when we were going to the moon on the norm.

But we're supposed to believe they were able to pull off a moon landing in 1969?

Government provided a jump platform as it often does when tech isnt yet profitable.

Now it’s time to step aside.

People get bent out of shape about government spearheading tech, and the. Others think government should be in charge forever. Sometimes government gives a good boost at the outset and then private enterprise turbocharges the industry or innovation.

Government is a hammer. Some people think a hammer can do anything, and some people think because a hammer can’t drill a hole, you should trash it.

Not to defend NASA, but John Glenn's first orbital flight was delayed eight times before it got off the ground. This kind of shite happens.

Yep.

In typical fashion, the gov doesn't use it's own money for stuff like that, so they think "yeah, we'll just waste those launch rockets and buy more."

Meanwhile, someone in the private sector, spending their own money, says "yeah, I think I'll find a way to reuse that instead of just wasting money." And he just does it.

NASA/SpaceX differences are proof of how inept taxpayer funded entities are. I mean, it's not even debatable. People who get paid to do great things or risk losing everything, do great things. Unfortunately, there are people who get paid to do great things, fail to accomplish most of their goals, and still get paid.

I am not sure I’m a fanboy of nasa. But I will say that few things captivated me more than the triumphs of nasa and specifically the Apollo missions when I was younger. It instilled so much pride, and created a sense of anything being possible. Now, however, it no longer warrants those feelings. I think this was Obama’s plan when he decided to make nasa’s primary objective to reach out to Muslims.

Also...I love how everyone of you are blowing SpaceX right now considering it took them almost 20 years from the time they were founded to the time they finally put a crew of astronauts into outer space. NASA was founded in 1958 and put a man on the moon in 11 years. SpaceX is still in earth orbit.

NASA is currently 0.48% of the federal budget, whereas they were 2% of the budget in 1969.

I suppose we will see how the private sector reacts when they obliterate a celebrity filled rocket.

NASA = Muslim Outreach Programs and NASA Bug Harvesting. NASA Bug Harvesting, as in NASA personnel walking around with spinning wire screened cages catching bugs. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

The experiment consisted of measuring the effect of bugs splattering (Men in Black style) on the aerodynamics (and fuel efficiency) of airplanes.

I kid you not.
