But I am happy things turned out well for you.
Thanks. I can tell you, though, that the people of SW Russia are as salt of the earth as they come. Culturally, they would fit right into south Louisiana. Very hospitable, take their faith seriously, would give you the shirt of their back despite owning nothing themselves.

Your son is a large individual. Funny, but I would not guess him as Russian. If I were guessing, my first guess would probably be Kazakh or maybe Turkmen.

DNA came back 33% Russian/Ukrainian, 33% Baltic State & 33% Middle Eastern. Makes since considering how far SW he was born. A friend has sworn he’s Armenian since he was 18 months. Her entire family is Armenian.

Seriously, that kid LOOKS like he’d be conquering villages on the Steppe. I could see him on horseback with a sword in one hand and a hawk on the other. Rurik would approve .

I know a couple outside of Moscow that used to run (they may still but I haven’t talked to them since 2018) an orphanage and they said it had become 2-3 times as hard to place orphans when Putin shut down adoption to the USA back in 2014. It sucks that government people include adoption as a foreign policy tool. All governments should be helping adoption agencies and orphanages in any country unless war is formally declared between those nations. However it’s awesome that it worked out for you and your family. Congratulations to yall and major props to LSURussian.

Yes. I’m still in touch with many of the Russian professionals who helped us through the legal process there and I hear the same.
We have to remember that 1st world countries do not allow their kids to be adopted internationally. It’s an embarrassment for countries who should be able to care for their own.
What breaks my heart right now is that any boys in those orphanages who are 16+ years old have already been sent to fight in Ukraine. They aren’t trained, just sent to catch bullets for the trained soldiers to come behind them. That’s where my son would be right now if he did not come to us.

Armenia is a Hell of a lot closer to Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan than it is to Moscow.
The Baltic thing is odd, too. I tend to think of Balts as being basically Scandinavian. Genes are weird.

“After the First World War (1914–1918) the term "Baltic states" came to refer to countries by the Baltic Sea that had gained independence from the former Russian Empire. The term included Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and originally also Finland, which more recently has become grouped among the Nordic countries.”

I have always considered Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians as being basically Nordic/Scandinavian.

Ah. But they aren’t. They are Baltic State, which is likely where his dna contribution came from considering they were part of Russia once. He was born in Smolensk which is much closer to Belarus than Moscow. Interesting that I had a decent percentage of Baltic State, as well, although I’m heavily Italian and French.

I would not consider Russia to be first world except for Moscow and St Petersburg. The town outside of Moscow that my friends’ orphanage outside of Moscow didn’t have toilets. They have running water but no sewer system and no septic tanks for some reason. They had chamber pots and outhouses. They made the older kids clean the chamber pots as punishment. This was in 2013 when Russia was at the peak of its economic recovery.

What a beautiful, amazing ode to LSURussian! Touching.
In 2005, after four years of trying (my wife had a very difficult pregnancy with our first in 2001, so maybe it was just her body telling her it wasn't ready for that again. I don't know why. It just wasn't happening. Even invitro wouldn't take.) We decided to adopt, and as you experienced, adoption in the US takes years, and at that time it was difficult to adopt from Russia and all over Europe. It was an easy call, though, and we found a good firm in Austin, and we went through the interviews, and were accepted for a program in China to adopt a young daughter.
Three days later, I was in San Diego on business. My wife called and asked me if I was sitting down. A million thoughts filled my head. I thought, "Someone died. Someone was in a car wreck. The house caught fire. Somebody has cancer. The IRS wants to audit." I was expecting bad news. It wasn't. She'd had a feeling, then tested and went to the doctor to confirm that she was pregnant. God can work in mysterious ways. The doctor that she had seen women get pregnant like this after so many years of trying, and she just thinks it's part of God's plan, so I have accepted that as why. We gave up the funds we'd paid to get started as a donation that would go to another family to help them with the costs of adoption, but even though I got a fantastic and handsome, talented son, who is now 17 years old, I often wonder what joys I've missed in life by not also continuing with the adoption.
Your story is beautiful and it brought a tear to my eye. Thank you.

I believe it was you who posted on here years ago that when you were going through the adoption process in Russia you were told that male Russian orphans who did not get adopted had a life expectancy of 19 (??) years because they were kicked out of their orphanage onto the streets when they reached a certain age. (I might be a little off on the ages but I remember it was ridiculously young.)
