Oh, the bums and underclass are there.....go right beyond the city center. Head east about 3 miles. Not as bad as Moscow but if you are a westerner, you probably rethink about how desirable it really is.

The 4 religions recognized and supported by Russian gov to various extents are Christian (primarily Eastern Orthodox), Judaism, Islam and Buddhism. The prevalence of each varies with geography. Moscow is a mixing pot. I've only spent time in Moscow and St Petersburgh which are far lovelier than spy movies suggest. There are seriously rundown suburbs and rural towns. Average people struggle to make ends meet, and older people miss the social safety net of Communism.
