Some of you may make light of this, but as a state we have been 49th-51st in education rankings for as long as they have been making them. The new reading focus gave us some good PR a couple years back, as we were the only state in the nation to show improvement in all tested grades.

This rankings lag a couple of years, but they are starting to come in. Mississippi made a move to 39th with the Casey Foundation.

Mississippi made a big commitment to literacy. Kids cannot advance past 5th grade without being able to read well. Studies showed that poor reading skills were one of the biggest factors for why children often became discouraged, disillusioned, disinterested, and disruptive in school by 8th grade. Many teachers can attest that while there’s not a big difference in public vs private primary school kids, a lot of public school kids change drastically by 8th grade.

By addressing that the root cause was an inability to read, causing them to end up being left behind in their other classes, Mississippi managed to significantly reduce dropouts and improve both performance and behavior.

This is not good at all. I'm originally from Alabama and our state motto is "Thank God for Mississippi".

Reminds me of the old SNL skit where Gov. Clinton was quoted as saying, "I am proud to say that as governor, we are no longer in last place in education. We passed up Mississippi."

Excellent take. Louisiana did make some strides in literacy this session with a pilot program, but it needs funding.

Instead we gave out another teacher pay raise.

That is seriously very impressive. I think the other thing schools can do is ensure that kids make it to school every day. Maryland had a system where staff called every home when a kid was absent and they found out why. Increased attendance and reduced problems significantly.

If we went back to the McGuffey reader to teach reading, we would be light years ahead of our current “balanced literacy” approach.

Alabama is about to move up in this ranking too. Can no longer pass 3rd grade if you can't read. Will have a monumental impact.

There’s no such thing as a conservative education at this point. There are a handful of traditional schools, but that’s it.

My concern is that this will simply end up liberalizing Mississippi.

It’s been moving up since the Republicans took over the Senate, House, and Governorship. And it has since been further getting better since obtaining supermajorities.

Years after years after years of Democrat rule in at least one branch left this state in the bottom two perpetually. Now it’s turning around.

And Dems are still fighting the best they can on reforms.

Liberals won't like this

Be careful of a "ground game initiative" to take over certain MS Cities.

One more reason I am glad to have moved to the great state of Mississippi 3 years ago. Also our public school still prays before all events. A community is only as good as it’s people. Sure there are some shitty parts of MS as well but there are plenty of rural gems if you know where to look.

That's what Mississippi did a decade ago to start this. It has been a game changer.

Well, they have to be retained in third grade one year unless they have a Good Cause Exemption.

Another big reason for the increased literacy numbers in MS is that MDE, along with other organizations, are pushing a science-based approach to teaching literacy.
