Just putting this out here, I have a 16 yo son, who is being recruited to play baseball. Among the schools is a well known Military college (not the service academies).

I come from a long line of military veterans, proudly served because they believed in what America stands for.

I am reluctant to encourage my son to serve someday, as quite honestly, I'm not sure what America he's going to be fighting for. Is it the America we've always known and loved?

I'm not sure. The level of corruption in Government, media, academia - the lurch to a leftist state? Should he fight for what's going on in Seattle and Portland and every major democratically controlled big city in the US? I don't want my son potentially dying for what I see when I look around today.

I'm conflicted.

I get being conflicted. But, remember that he's not just serving for the shitheads, but the good people, too.

If my son wanted to join the military I'd talk him out of it.

He has to answer the question, "Why does he want to serve?"

If he feels a calling to do so, it doesn't matter who the CINC is or what the political climate is.

Remember, we swear allegiance to a DOCUMENT, an IDEA, not an individual or any group.

Nothing wrong with the senior service colleges that aren't service academies, but as a mid-career Army officer I would not pay a dime for any of my boys to attend one that isn't Texas A&M. If he is getting a full ride than good deal but paying out of pocket for Norwich, VMI, Citadel, etc... no thanks.

I personally feel service is more important now than ever. I am currently attending a civilian institution, living away from a military base. Military service imparts some unique qualities that many civilians lack.

Thanks for your service, brother. Honestly, as long as a Dem is in the Whitehouse, I would not encourage my kids to serve. That being said, it is up to them and they know the path they want to go. It's not an easy thing to figure out. Prayers for you brother.

Ya'll are more informed about this than me...

But my thought would be that we need all the structured, hardened, disciplined men we can come up with in a world that is increasingly deconstructed, softened and lawless.

I know it's probably not that simple when it's your kid. I also recognize the military might not be what it once was. But I suspect it still provides these things in quantities not seen elsewhere.

I agree with this, however don't forget the CIC can also due to funding or lack of, make it much more dangerous for someone to serve in the military than needed. Cutting training, ridiculously stupid ROE's etc.

What's wrong with VPI? (Virginia Tech)

By the time I retire at the end of the year, I will have served under four different administrations; 2 Democrat and 2 Republican. The worst of the four, by far, was Clinton. Even President Obama was somewhat curtailed by SECDEF Gates before trying to implement his changes post-2011.

Well if those that believe in service, country and integrity choose not to serve we surrender our security and power to those who don't hold our values. The same goes with every other institution in this country.

If we leave a vacuum we may not like what fills it.

I would send him to the military college without question. At least those colleges are not yet left wing indoctrination academies.

Don't join the Guard, you'll be activated atleast 2-3 a year. Ain't no way to hold down a job doing that. It'll take years to finish school as well.

Just let him know that the USA will be at war for his entire military career and that he can expect to spend around half of his military career deployed to the Middle East, while his wife and kids eke out a living at home without him there to be with his wife to raise his family.

MANY young women THINK that this will be "living their best life", and, for a handful of years, it is. However, after living this lifestyle for those years, MANY of them change their minds and decide that "living their best life" will involve NOT being married to that particular military service member. MANY marriages fail from the stress caused by the military career.

Send him off to The Citadel. Had many friends while I was there that played baseball. Good team and even have a couple guys playing pro. One was pitching the other night in the majors that was at The Citadel when I was there.

False.

-At any one point, 45% of the active force has never deployed to the CENTCOM AOR.

-The majority of deployments now are not Hostile-Fire zone deployments. There's a rotational (9 month) Brigade in Korea and a rotational (9 month) Brigade in Europe at all times right now.

It was a Republican that started these pointless Middle East Wars

Even though I'm an A&M Former Student and dead zip and am heavily biased in that direction, I have no issues with the other Senior Military Colleges except for Norwich. Their graduates, for some reason, almost all have severe inferiority complexes.

Honestly its the domestic situation that concerns me more so than international affairs.

Are you familiar with Marion Military Institute in Alabama? 2 year program, get your commission. I graduated from High School there.
