re: Middle class in Louisiana… how much?

quote:that would roughly be around $8,000 a month take home after taxes/401k/insurance deductions (id need more details to be more accurate on that).
My wife and I make about 150k combined and live in a house we bought for 130k. Only have one car note and it still feels like we aren't ever able to save as much as we should. We eat out maybe twice a month. We don't have kids. I don't see how folks with 3 or 4 kids at this income level are swinging it.
On the safe side, you have probably have $4,000+ a month of spending money after bills. Where the hell is your money going?

You've got a spending problem.
I was thinking the same...This is almost identical to me. Me and thew wife are saving 40k a year (no car or house notes though)

Gas/Maintenance - $225
Cars - $600 ( 2 notes)
Car insurance - $150
Medical - $300
Phone - $125
These numbers are delulu. Seriously, either that is liability only for insurance but you can't do that with a care note or some sketchy not real insurance.
We are comfortably in the mid 100's depending on how much I decide to work extra and it ain't all that easy these days. I felt like I had more money when we were making $80k a year combined in the mid 2000's, and definitely had more money when we were around 120k in the 2010's.
We aren't poor, but damn it doesn't feel like middle class like it use to.

Phone - $125
Internet - $80
Subscriptions - $125 (any you want, middle class)
I get all that for under $200. And live in a “higher cost of living”state than LA
Are you getting this at a gas station?
quote:
Groceries/household supplies - $1500
Eating out - $1000
$83 dollars a day to eat!?
What kind of food are you buying?
I have a family of four and spend $1,000 a month and eat out way more than we should. Atleast twice a week.
Had 2 large pizzas and 2 large salads for $90 today. And will have leftovers.
Another $90 another day this week And then groceries for rest of week.
Way cheaper than $83/day.
And again. “High cost of living state”
And that’s including alcohol drinks. Which are not a need. Water is free
quote:
Incidental - $1000
$83 a day on groceries isn’t enough? Dude I’m over weight and can eat and don’t spend this much with a a family of 4 eating out twice a week with growing teens and their friends over eating. Even add feeding 2 dogs and 2 cats and I’m. Not spending that. and over $330 for phones/internet/subscriptions? Man I have family of 4. 4 phones. 2 work phones. And enough internet for both kids and me gaming and wife working full time remote
And then you need to spend even more money?!
You have everything you needed listed and over priced.
What are you throwing $1,000 more a month away on?
Imagine paying off debt or investing that $1,000. Or paying car notes off early?
No wonder people are broke.

Was thinking we make about the same. Have a lot bigger house note. And have a lot of discretionary funds left over.

I can tell you that 300,000$ + combined doesn't go as far as you think. Sounds good on paper. Married , two kids at LSU.
House note
4 cars on the road. 1 extra truck
Kids apartment rent.
Sorority dues
Food cost for four adults
That’s just what came to mind besides the standard stuff mentioned in this thread.

So, "middle class" literally means the middle quintile. Nationally, to be in that middle quintile of income, a household would need between about $60k to about $100k. Upper middle class (the fourth quintile), is about $100k to about $160k.
If your household income is above $160k, at least nationally, that puts you in the top 20% of earners. Obviously, $160k in the SF Bay area, Manhattan, D.C. (the usual suspects) ain't shite.
To sort of localize some of that math, take your area's median household income and double it. If you are double or greater, you're not middle class. You're upper class.
And if you are in the first quintile, you know that and don't need to do any math.

Do you think I posted my budget?
These are rough numbers for a general family. You could likely tell me why every number I posted is wrong based on your circumstances.

4 people at $15 a day is $60. 30 days x $60 is $1,800. Throw in bathroom necessities and cleaning supplies and you are over $2,000. That’s only $5 a meal with no snacks.

Thank you
These threads are always so delusional. There's actual math that defines middle class.
Sure, your money doesn't go as far as you think anymore but your perception of what middle class should be doesn't define it. It's just what it is.

The wife and I combined are at 200k and I don't feel like I'm middle class. Maybe low middle class.

I pay $140 for a Lincoln Aviator and Jeep Wrangler with State Farm. We don’t drive a ton (I work from home and my wife has a 7 mile round trip to work), and we use the Drive Safe & Save program. Neither vehicles are liability only.

Do your kids go to private school? Do you live in a 400k+ house? Do you have car notes on 2 vehicles?

Similar to us with State Farm. Our 6 month policies are $562 for my truck and $594 for my wife's car, so $192/mo. That's with 100/300 coverage.
Our teenager blows the bill up otherwise. Her insurance is more than both of ours combined.

Just seems super high to me to eat at home. I do our budget and we don't spend anywhere close to $600/wk at the grocery store.

The problem with America is - since the 1930s there are no needs, only wants.
So, that's why Americans, in particular, have no idea there is a difference.

While not in La, we are combined 210K with $30/month medical, 1 car note, and 2 kids public school. We have a good bit left over after bills every month and feel solidly in the middle to upper middle. Not really wanting for anything more, so people can definitely make it work at that price.

My parents were middle class when I was a kid. Possibly even upper middle class. My dad was college educated and made a nice living.
We lived in a 1500 sq ft house with a family of 5. Dad typically drove 10+ yr old vehicles. Most years summer vacations were to Houston to Astroworld.
Middle class lifestyle expectations are way different today than even in the 70s and 80s.
