You right. I’m sure if a prominent Klan portrait artist with graphic pieces painted Trumps portrait the MSM would understand.

That's a terrible painting. It's racist, but the quality is the most offensive thing about it.

I don't agree that any of these paintings are "racist".

That was part of his point. During this period, Wiley was funded by large fashion houses like Givenchy to produce a series of portraits that he based off Baroque, Neo-Classical, and Romantic style portraiture. In one piece he updated an equestrian portrait done by Rubens. In another, he updated a Jacques-Louis David piece. In these two prints he did, Judith beheading Holofernes, he directly references Artemis Gentileschi, and attempts to combine change the context of the pieces so that they are provocative, fundamentally attempting to discuss what identity is, in both the personal and national sense. That it is literally a direct reference to the Old Testament, and a famous Baroque painter, the juxtaposition by itself has proven worthwhile for him as an artist.

Sorry, too complex for the mouthbreathers.

It's not complex, it's a derivative platform for him to paint a black woman killing whitey.

It's only creative and interesting to idiots

Lol, of course you don't! But I recall vividly your thoughts on the rabid racism of civil war sculpture.

Kehinde Wiley, the guy you're referring to, painted President Obama’s portrait, not Michelle's.

So he is updating a classic painting to change the context which means he really isn’t painting a Bible story at all. Given some in our society, particularly in the field of art, are hyper focused on race, it is not off base to interpret these paintings in the context of race relations. In fact, that seems to be exactly what he meant the piece to do.

No it isn't

You didn't even bother to read your own link.

1) It was a man who was beheaded
2) It is part of the books of the apocrypha and no Protestant would consider them as canon

So other than not being anything like you said, spot on!

To be fair, there is a lot of awful shite in the Bible that we criticize today:

Slavery
Genocide
Polygamy
Beating of wives
Etc.

I think the paintings are ridiculous on their own. And, I’m not concerned with the other ugly “art” this person ( whom I’d never heard of before and I look forward to forgetting) created.

But, to suggest one shouldn’t criticize something because “it is based on a story in the Bible “ is silliness.

Artist intentionally creates controversial art - laments controversy.

Again, silliness

How do you interpret that Holofernes was a white woman and that Judith was a black woman?

So much love and cheap wall paper in that painting it just looks like Trade Day redneck drama.
