Forces entered the country's Afrin province today just 24 hours after pounding the region with airstrikes. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim reportedly said they are targeting US-backed Kurdish fighters. Shocking pictures show dozens of tanks and armoured vehicles crossing over the border in a terrifying display of military might.

It came just hours after Turkey launches airstrikes in Afrin, with the military claiming it had hit 153 targets so far, including shelters and hideouts used by Kurdish militants. But the YPG – which is backed by the United States but classed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey – said they had killed six civilians and three of its fighters. Turkey has dubbed the action "Operation Olive Branch", which has seen them carry out relentless airstrikes yesterday. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, wrote on Twitter: "In its second day, OliveBranchOperation continues to ensure peace and security for our people, protect Syria's territorial integrity and eliminate all terrorist elements in the region. "Turkey expects its allies to support its fight against terrorism in all of its forms."

Sucks for the YPG. They were happy to do our bidding and now they’re about to be hung out to dry.

I made a post about this a couple of days ago. And this is the second time the Turks have invaded Syria, the first being Operation Euphrates Shield. This particular invasion comes with Russian and Syrian acquiescence, as the Russians moved their observers out of Afrin in anticipation of the attack. Given that the Kurdish question is a primary security concern to the Turks, the fact of this operation isn't surprising.

I wonder if Tillerson's comments on establishing a border force made up of SDF forces sped up the timeline of the intervention, as Turkey has no interest in such a situation, given that the SDF is made up of many fighters from the YPG.

I don't think anyone in the West actually wants to solve the Kurdish issue. Continuing to dangle that carrot to the Kurds will always give various parties in the West leverage over the various Kurdish groups.

Is ISIS Sunni or Shia?

Sunni and Shia seem to play ball together but Kurd are odd man out?

Why would Russia/Syria go against Kurds. Thought they were both attacking IS

It's very complicated. No doubt Erdogan is devout, and has become more devout after the death of his mother in 2011, but Turkey isn't Islamist, yet. That Islamism has pan-Arabic overtones means the Turks are hesitant about it. That said, Erdoganism is basically Turkish conservatism, which stands opposed to Kemalism, as the latter promotes a secular state, and the former prefers governance based on local traditions as well as strong centralized leadership.

In this sense, Erdogan's actions aren't necessarily different from other dictators in history or in the region, but his support is broadly based on the economy, which has grown under his rule. That there is a wide divide between actual Islamists and Erdogan is another issue, as their is deep skepticism of Erdogan's cult of personality.

They are Wahabi/Salafi subsect of the Hanbali school of jurisprudence, the least popular school of the four schools of Sunni jurisprudence. The Turks are broadly Hanafi.

The Sunni and Shia groups aren't aligned, broadly speaking, though it is complicated. The Kurds are the odd man out for a couple of reasons. First their population is spread through 4 different countries, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran. They are a Persian group but are Sunni, which alienates them from basically all of what would be their natural allies. Secondly the Kurds are split themselves, as they have a number of groups that do not align with each other, necessarily. Thirdly, the Turks have been fighting a variety of Kurdish groups since the 70's, and thus the Kurdish question is a primary security concern for them. Lastly, the Kurdish question is a convenient way to weaken near neighbors, as both Iran and Iraq in the 70s funded opposition groups in the other's countries to weaken them. The Turks funded Kurdish groups in Syria, and the Turkish Kurds have gotten funding from a variety of sources.

Russia nor Syria are interested in a direct conflict with the Turks. IS is mostly dead, though it will surely reform as an insurgency in the coming years.

Are you fricking stupid or something?

Trump supporters don’t love, like or support Erdogan. He’s a filthy Muslim. He also punked the US, because of weak arse Obama, and surrounded our base that contained nukes, and would not let planes fly in or out. We could not even get our nukes out. We don’t even know if we got them out because the story died in the aftermath of the coup.

Erdogen came to have all this power under the leadership of Obama’s term.

Think you’re wrong on that. Why would Trump supporters like Erdogan? Most of us probably wish that coup worked too

The coup did work, exactly as Erdogan planned.
