The difference in your scenario is he admitted guilt. Not because they tricked him or had made up evidence, but because he is guilty.

He is clearly just straight up lying about The Hill having confirmed it. Sounds like the lie of a desperate man. Whether he's just desperate for attention or desperate for other reasons, who knows...
