It happens fast. 6-7 people can be stabbed long before anyone processes what's happening, formulates a response, and then acts on it.

Guy I worked with some time ago was leaving a bar and guy was knocking his GF around in the parking lot. He intervened and GF jumped on co worker. He ended up getting to his truck. Guy comes at him with a tire iron. He shoots guy with gun he had in his truck. Guy lives but most of his large intestine is removed. Co worker has to hire an attorney because DA sends case to grand jury and he gets sued in civil court. He prevailed in both cases but cost him 15K in attorney fees.
Sometimes just mind your own business.

Clothes rack, large bulk can of beans, softball bat, tools, etc. anything to swing or throw at the perp to knock him off guard then someone tackle him.
